Well yes & no. Yes I’m starting from scratch(again…)[B)], & no I’m not doing any scratchbuilding[:I]. I’ve been getting on to this forum for sometime now but sad to say I haven’t started any projects yet. I was building models for a while then but when the time came for me to up & go I left almost all of my tools & materials( not to mention the photos)[:(]. It wasn’t easy but I have to depart from modeling for a while & up 'till now I’m still trying to put it all back together again from scratch.[banghead] I do have some models with me right now but I still can’t start building them until i set up my workplace(just temporary) & complete the tools that I need. Anyway, I just wanted to know if any of you has experienced my problem.[#dots]
I quit for a while but I kept my models, kits, supplies, and tools. My kits stayed intact, most of my supplies went bad, some of my tools got a little surface rust, but the real tragedy was my built kits. I had them neatly boxed and stored in the attic. Some furniture that was stacked nearby settled and fell over destroying all but a couple of nearly 20 years of building. I reboxed the mangled models and only occasionaly look at them. It still makes me sick to think of those countless hours of work and hundreds of small triumphs, all gone! I hope you don’t let your set back stop you from making it back to the hobby and us here on the forum.[:)]
alex - I, too, took a break for a few years (my girlfriend could only see them as "kid’s toys). I still kept all my stuff, and only 20-30 bottles of paint went bad. Good luck putting it back together.
I hear you, Woody. I had over 100 “snapped apart” the last time I moved. I put each one, along with its respective parts, into 1 gallon zip-lock bags. Some of my best work was there. I look at mine 2-3 times a year. I’ve only repaired 2 of them. It breaks my heart to see them that way. I have an idea of how you must feel.

Pix, If your like me to rebuild them would be like starting over. Almost like saying those kits never existed. I can’t bring myself to go there.
Kaalvin, I feel your pain as well. I’m the oldest of six. I don’t think I ever had anything that wasn’t molested by those little terrors! LOL
I hear you woody, my little brother only recently admitted, although I had known, about all the years of playing with my models while I was gone. Not like I never figured it out getting home pieces broken or missing. It’s amazing what he admits to now that he’s bigger than me.
Well Ive lost models due to moves and such…but I have never sold off all of my kits or supplies/tools…
I didnt have a whole lot go bad while I was away from the hobby sure a few bottles of paint went bad but most of its still good and was never opened when I left…I guess Im lucky
As an airforce brat we were always saying good bye to the models every couple of years and rebuilding the shop; later when the kids were little they trashed my tools which put me out of the hobby (and them into it) for a few years, now I’ve been getting all set up again for a couple of years and finally starting some serious work … hope I can keep the shop intact for a while this time around.

Even already almost a year back into the hobby, I feel that I am still starting. Afterall, I still don’t have all the tools necessary and still have to resort to some crude ways of doing things. When I started last year I felt completely the same without nothing hobby-related tools at hand.
I know the feeling.
Since I returned to the hobby early this year, I have spent way more on tools, airbrush, compressor, files, and cutters, than I have on the 5 kits I have so far bought, of which only one of which is actually complete. Or was complete until it took a dive from the book shelf. Wife induced trauma.
I figure it’ll be a while yet before I feel like I actually know that much, and even then you still keep learning.
It never ends…thankfully.

I quit for a while before I got married. We had moved into a new place and I was working all the hours I could to pay bills. What little stock I had at the time(5 built, 7 unbuilt and a toolbox ) got moved into the spare room. All the finished stuff got damaged beyond repair so my wife decided to buy me a kit to cheer me up. That night, I was on the dining room table building like a man possessed! I have’nt looked back since over the last few years and all my hobby stuff has just built up slowly around me and so has my knowledge.
To anyone coming back to the hobby I’d simply say this, start small and cheap and have fun-the rest will happen later.
LOL makes sense to me, Chris! My littlest Bro is also bigger than me by about 20lb. and 2-3 inches in height. Smarter too! A real live scientist, Dr. Billy. Of course I’m nice to him now and don’t bring up any of that model kit unpleasantness! LOL
My brother is actually two years older than me - didn’t stop him a few years back checking out the shot deflection of the “armour” on my tanks with an air pistol. Even something as well sloped as a T34 has difficulty dealing with a .22 lead pellet fired from close range.
Seeing as he also tested out the shot deflection of my mum’s lamp shades he got busted big time.
He also drew Hitler moustaches on the crew of my Panther. Not sure I found that as amusing as he did.
I got out of the hobby for a number of years. Most of my paint and other supplies went bad and had to be replaced/augmented. The tools and other equipment stayed in good shape; I had packed them carefully. Same with the unbuilt kits. Unfortunately, I was very shortsighted and had given away all my built kits to a neighbor and a cousin. I’ve never gottn over that bit of foolishness. None of the kits I donated are around any more. All I have are two photos that were taken of the bulk of my collection at the time.
