Starting a Bell P-39 (completed 'pit pics added 08-08)

I’ve been working on Eduard’s 1/48 P-39Q Profi Pack kit along with the Hasegawa Mustang.

The cockpit is painted with Humbrol Bronze Green. This paint is THICK ! It took a while to thin it to airbrushing consistency.

This version of the kit has lots of PE goodies. There’s still quite a few items to add to the sidewalls. There’s decals for the placards, and wiring included also. This will build into a very detailed cockpit. So far, the fit has been great, and the panel lines are finely engraved. I have some Aeromaster decals, and I almost can’t wait to finish it !

Thanks for letting me share the start of another build !

Very nice so far as always pix, I have the standard version thats waiting its turn patiently.

ooooooooooooo!!! Nice…

Looks nifty, Pix! Eagle and Butz, you seein’ this?

This just gave me another idea for yet another GB…

Fade to Black…

Excellent progress so far, I built the same kit some years ago, for a mag review, only problem I found with it is the trailing edges of the wing are a bit thick, looking forward to seeing more on this build.

Rob.

Sweet looking cockpit Pix… that thing’s going to look sweet. Is this going to be one of Comrad Stalin’s birds?

Again you are one of the standard setters Pix

Thank you 9x19mm, BlackWolf, Lobbie, Adam, & woodbeck !

I really like the instrument panel in this kit. It’s all PE (14 parts) & film negatives (4).

Adam - I’ll be using these markings:

Not the most colorful, but I like it.

Thanks again !

Very nice cockpit work, man. Love the P-39.

the best part Pix is that you’re STARTING a new project…

Looks good Pix. Have you seen this months issue of Air Classics? It’s got a ton of 'cobra pictures in it. Might be worth a peek at . It breaks down all the variants of the 39 and includes some really nice profiles. The Airacobra is definately one of my favorite WWII A/C.

Thanks bdelov, cirikili, & roadkill !

roadkill - I haven’t seen that issue. Unfortunately, the only newsstand in town closed over a year ago. I’ve found some decent pics on the 'net, though.

Yeah, the P-39 had such a streamlined shape for an early-war aircraft. I’ve always liked the look of the mid-engine & car doors. Plus that big cannon in the spinner ! Too bad it was not more successful as a fighter, but being pretty doesn’t win any battles.

Thanks again !

Looks great so far! [tup]Keep us posted with your progress.

I too like the look of the P-39. I built Monogram’s Promodeler P-39Q several years ago in Shomo’s markings, and it was a very nice kit. I have a fondness for those Monogram models. I have Eduard’s P-400 in my stack, and have heard good things about this kit too. As you say, lots of goodies come with the Profi-pack.[:)]

Looks like a great kit!

Looks like the start of another great build. Did you say 14 parts for the instrument panel? That sounds like it’d be a bit tricky to put together. Keep posting pics as you progress.

Off to a great start Pix ! One thing to be careful of is the fit of the doors to the canopy frame if you want the doors closed. If you leave em open, it’s no problem.

Regards, Rick

very nice pit indeed Bill. nice job. later.

pix i see the assembly line is on full production. excellent. it looks fantastic.

joe

The P-39!! Jolly good show, Bill, that will certainly be “pixilating”!!

Take care,
Frank

Looks great Pix. Keep the pics coming, it surely will be another of your super builds. semper fi, mike

Thanks Mark, dj, pingtang, Rick, saltydog, fightnjoe, Frank, & yw18mc !

pingtang - I use PE on most of my builds, so I’m fairly confident using it. It’s NOT a kit to build if you’ve never used PE before. There’s a lot of alignment to the assembly of the instrument panel, and it’s difficult to get a second try gluing it without bending the parts.

Rick - I read about that point in FSM’s review of this kit, and I’ve dryfitted them. To close one or both, you can cut the window frame from the door, glue the door in place, and use some clear plastic for the windows. But since there’s so much detail in this cockpit, I’ll pose both doors open.

Thanks again ! This sure is a fun little kit !
