Started my Hasegawa F-16A Tiger Meet 2003 kit tonight

Since I like to build a modern jet along with a prop kit at the same time I thought I would start on my Hasegawa 1/48 F-16A Tiger Meet 2003 kit tonight.
I painted the cockpit parts but am a little disappointed in the level of detail, or lack thereof in this kit. The instrument panel only has one CRT on the left side and none on the right even though the instructions show both of them in the drawings. [:(!]
This must be older tooling I assume.
Oh well, this kit is more for show of the paint scheme anyhow so the interior is not that important. [:D] [;)]

Mike

sounds cool mike!! i’ve got an F/A-18E on the bench from italeri and detail is scant in the pit too. i bought the SU-17 resin ejection seat for around $3 bucks from squadron and it dresses up the pit fairly nicely. i used the kit supplied, dreaded decal instrument panel, but i’m not worried about it. you got a ref. pic we can view? is the tiger stripes decals? have fun friend. later.

Chris,

This is the box art photo:

The artwork are decals, yes.
Here is a photo of the real plane on this page:
http://www.tiger-link.com/NTM2003%20-%20page%202.htm
The picture in the middle of the second row from the top is it.
This is the Belgian Air Force F-16A and is not quite as colorful as some of the others I have seen. Maybe I will do a more exotic one down the road.
I would like to try and freehand a paint job on one sometime with the Sotar. [;)]

Mike

Correction: The F-16A/B did have only the one CRT screen on the left.
My bad. [:D] [;)]

Mike

Wow Mike… that looks really cool… I can’t wait to see it done. Are you gonna post pics?

Scot,

I sure will post photos when it is done. [:D] [;)]

Mike

…the best to ya Mike
i just love the tiger meet artwork…

Let me be the one to complicate things here [:D]: the Belgian F-16 seems to be an F-16MLU (sometimes called AM as in A-MidLifeUpdate). Just look at the prominent vanes just in front of the canopy.
Check out a closeup of the canopy on a Belgian F-16AM here:

And here’s a view of the cockpit of an AM simulator:

Her’s one of an illuminated Belgian F-16AM cockpit:

And another one at daytime from another angle:

By the way, some of the Hasegawa kits I have built included a choice of two instrument boards. Are you sure you only have the A version in your kit?

Hey Mike, Lets see some progress pics as you progress [:)]. I’ve never built an F-16, but always admired it. Good luck on the build.

Regards, Rick

mike i may never build a modern a/c but with you and the others i can enjoy them. post lots of pics.

joe

Filibert,

Yes it only has the one instrument panel for an F-16A so it is correct in the kit, I just think the drawing in the instructions is wrong.

Rick and Joe,

I will post pictures as both it and the P-47D come along. [:)]

Mike

I think you may have misunderstood me there Mike. The F-16AM (the subject of your kit, not an F-16A) is supposed to have TWO crt’s in the cockpit, different HOTAS system, wide-angle Hud and some other mods. You can easily recongize the AM version by the IFF vanes in front of the canopy. The MLU aircraft do seem to differ slightly between the various airforces, that’s why I only provided links to Belgian aircraft.
My point is, the instructions may well be correct. Then again, if it were me I might just glue the parts in that are included in the kit, and then add the (obvious) IFF aerial to the nose, and call the thing finished[;)]. Don’t wanna be pedantic, just wanted to make sure you don’t misunderstand me. Do show some pics, whatever way you build it![8D]

Thanks for the info Filibert and sorry if I misinterpreted what you were trying to say. I must have read the post too quickly. [:D]
I don’t really care about accuracy on this kit as I bought it mainly for the cool looking graphics on the outside. I will look into your suggestions though and may just add the IFF aerial to the nose as you said and call it good. [;)]
That works for me.

Mike

I’m looking forward to it Mike. [8D]

Filibert,

My ancestry is half Dutch so maybe we are distant cousins. [:D] [;)]

Mike

Man I love those Tiger Meet birds. Some of the best paint schemes I’ve ever seen on a plane come from those. Are you planning any more Tiger Meet birds after this one Mike?

mike, i know you have the kit decals, but if you ever plan to do more of the tiger jobs, have you seen Albatros’s offerings of thier tiger meet decals? pretty cool, i’ll have to dig up the link. later.

Josh,

I don’t know if they have the decals or not but I want to someday do one of the Mirage 2000 ones like this:

as well as the Tornado one here:

Chris,

Yes, I would like to see that link as I too love Tiger Meet jets and would like to do several eventually.

Mike

you doing this tiger and a jug… at the same time!!! gonna take twice as long now [;)]. Why dont you just base coat it, future it and do the theme yourself using the decals as reference with your sotar and ink

Well, there’s only about 15 million of us, so who knows?[;)]
