STAR WARS Y-WINGS OLD & NEW

Has anyone bought the new y-wing that came out the same time as the republic cruiser?

is it a new mold or a cleaned up version of the original mpc mold?

I just got a old mpc kit off e-bay , and then saw the new kit at the lhs in town, $28.00 seems a lot if all it is is a re-issue. any help would be great.

What company? If you want quality, ignore the revell snap tight kits, and get the fine molds Ywing, its gorgeous.

I think the new one is revell, it’s boxed the same as the republic cruiser. I thought i saw a 1/48th scale y offered some where but oldtimers is getting to me(i’m 43) if my head was loose i’d probly try turning it into a death star lol

Now THAT would be an unusual bit of scratchbuilding![;)]

Revell has been releasing EZ-Kits of Star Wars, these are mostly snap-together pre-painted kits. They are NOT repackaging of older AMT/ERTL molds. AMT/ERTL did re-release some kits as well, but I have not seen the Y-Wing among them.

Agreed that the Fine Molds Y-Wing is the kit of choice for detail, accuracy, and all-around perfection. They are expensive, comparitively, and not available in all hobby stores.

By the way, Smeagol, that’s a great song in your sig.

The original Y-wing by MPC is smaller than the new Revell(Yes New Tooling), THe level of detail on both is pretty ok. The revell one should look good with a wash over it, I think from looking at both that the revell is better.

The Revell should be in between both the MPC and finemolds in size. I have examined the revell one against the photos on starshipmodeller.com and it looks good enough.

I will be posting Wip’s here soon (new year) as part of the star wars GB.

The fine molds is best got from either starshipmodeller.com or HLJ.

Just by a way of info. Revell have released the Republic Star Destroyer ass a pre-painted snap job.

Regards,

Terry.

Thanks for the feed back, I’m just gonna get one of the new y-wings with the gift card the missus got me for Christmas (i’m the plastic addict and she’s my enabler). It may be my version of ADD , but I always like buying kits in pairs. don’t know why , just always the way i’ve done it. now that I have the old mpc/ertl kit it just makes sense to get the new revell one.

What kind of money is the fine molds kit running? I have heard good things about them , but also that they are pricey.

Heh! I do that too, so that I have spare parts, or extras if any pieces are incompletely molded or deformed.

I usually see it around $40, bu if you look around I bet you can find it cheaper.

HLJ posts pictures and descriptions w/ most of their “for sale” models, gives a basis for comparison:

Thanks for the links cosmic j, pretty funny to see so many zero’s in a price.

has anybody built a “new” Y-wing? according to the book series the rear engine areas of the ships are supposed to have panels on them and that due to the need for quick maintnance and lack of parts most of the ships the rebels had no longer had the coverings on them.

Ben Skywalker steals a well maintained Y-wing in the last book series to get where he needs to go . the fact that the ship was in private hands would add a new twist to the shape that it was in.Much like collector cars today, anyone with a flyable Y-wing would realy want to have it to keep it in flyable condition, much like the confederate air force with thier war bird collection.

Wow, the dollar is droping in worth… ugh. I remember a time when 2400 yen was about 24$ not 27$

I hear that. Back when I first started haunting HLJ, 1500 yen was about $11. Earlier this year the yen became more valuable than the penny for the first time in my life. It was quite distressing… [:O]

I heard that Lucas suggested the fighters in SW be designed that way because he was into vintage hot rods at the time, which often had no hoods over the engines. I personally don’t think the y-wing would look as good if it was all smooth…
