SR-71 'Bird complete

Howdy, remember when I said everytime I post a new WIP or join a group build the project never seems to get done? You may remember my most recent attempt at a WIP with a B-17…Well, it stalled.

SO I kept this one top secret until it was complete. It’s Monogram’s 1/72 scale kit released I’m guessing around '00 or '01.

It has a parts count that is about on par with a 1/72 scale aircraft, and has the typical Monogram crisp detail.

After prepping all the parts, I started with the cockpit, just a straight out of the box build, and basic detailing.

The cockpit fits very well in the fuselage.

After joining the fuselage halves, I filled the seams with Bondo red spot putty. Sanded, and I re-scribed the detail lost due to the puttying.

I then masked the pit and primered with Duplicolor DAP-1692 grey automotive primer. It’s easy on the plastic and I am yet to find any brand or type of top coat that is incompatible with it. I then shot it with Krylon Fusion Black, and forgot about it for 4 days. Krylon dries nicely, without an undue long cure-to-handle time.

I then applied the decals, which gave me the most grief of the entire build, since they are close to, if not 10 years old. But I managed to keep patience. After the decals set for 48 hours, I finished up with a top coat of Krylon Matt Finish #1311.

Hope you enjoy!! Any comments/criticisms accepted.[H]

Nicely done [Y]. Thanks for sharing.

Great Job, Kustom!

I have that very same kit in my stash as well. It looks like it builds up without any major surpises. I just hope mine turns out as well as yours did. The finish looks pretty good!

How long did it take you to finish this bird?

Eric

Thats a nice clean build…thanks for sharing.

Very nice work on the Blackbird. I have just two minor nit-picks. The Clark 1031 pressure suits for the pilot and RSO should be a light orange rather than yellow and the national insignia & USAF marks should be ahead of the elevon hinge line instead of overlapping it. I like the detail you have in the cockpit and the overall finish.

Nice build. I really like what you did with the cockpit.

I like it, Kustom. Definitely looks like a good, solid build. I’m a big fan of this bird anyway… [Y]
