Squadron Vacu-Form canopies

I give up. What is the “safe” way to trim a vacu form canpopy away from it’s base? I had to pick one up for my AMT 1/48 P-40N - the kit canpoy does not even come close to a proper fit.

Thanks!

Oh yeah, what is a “profipack” kit. I noticed that Eduard has a couple P-40 variants listed as such.

Ray, i have only done this twice, but each time the results came out OK. i use a brand new xacto knife blade, and very, very gently scribe along the edge of the canopy. it usually takes about 4 good trips over the sam spot to get through the material. when i get the canopy free, i sand the edges with a fine sanding stick VERY lightly. i have 2 P-51D canopies loose and ready to assemble using this method. good luck friend. later.

Thanks Chris, sounds like a safe bet.

I do it the old fashioned way with scissors.

Eduard Profi-Pack kits usually include additional detail parts in resin, PE & paint masks, not included in the regular kits.

Thanks Rick. So it’s not that the airframe is vacuform or anything like that?

No. The plastic moldings in the kits are identical. Just added detail parts are included that would normally be condsidered Aftermarket. The ProfiPack kits usually contain different markings on the decal sheet as well.

I use the knife and sanding stick routine. Cut fairly close to the finished edge and then sand down the rest, (slowly and carefully). Patience is the name of the game. Test fit frequently during the sanding phase. You might not want to go completely to the marked edge in one area or another.

That’s interesting about the profipack kits. So why are folks so eargerly awaiting H’gawa examples of the P-40 in 1/48 when Eduard already has a couple out there? Does Eduard use the AMT mold or something?

BTW, thanks for the tip Yard…

Eduard uses the older Mauve tooling, but it’s really an excellent kit. They make 2 versions, the N & M. Hasegawa released the E, and it is the most accurate & detailed E in 1/48. The pending release of the Hasegawa N has caused some excitement, but I doubt it will be much of an improvement on the Eduard Profi-Pack N.

Yeah, I think I will give the Eduard series a shot. I already have AMT’s N and F and they are not too bad.
