I was working on filling in my seams of my B-2 last night when I noticed that my putty was drying way too fast. This is a 1/72 scale model and the wing span is quite large. Is there something I can add to it to make it dry a little slower? Or am I supposed to add something to the putty before using? As always any help is greatly appreciated.
I don’t know of anything that will make it dry slower, and I have never added anything to my putty before I use it. I think the stuff just dries fast when the humidity is low ( air condtioned room) My advice would be to try and work a smaller area at a time. Good luck!
I did see the tip on Swannys site. Actually, I have printed all the tips out and but them in a binder which sit’s on my desk. I guess that’s kind of Nerdy.
Eizzle,
I will try working in the garage next time. It’s kind of Hot (95+) here in Texas, but the garage should be bearable in the evening.
You can thin the Green Putty with Testors liquid cement, the stuff that comes in the little square bottle. I will squeeze out a gob of putty into a bottle cap or something similar (NOT something plastic!) and reconstitute the putty with drops of cement as it dries out.
The best way I’ve found to use the squadron putty is to thin it right down with acetone. Mix some putty with with acetone in a small container till I get a nice paste. I then brush it on using a stiff brush. The brush cleans up with acetone very nicely. This works really well and i get no bubbles and I can build it up where it’s needed most.
I’ve heard people caution against straight acetone but i’m yet to have a problem. If you are worried though, try using acetone based nail polish remover. It may be less harsh.
I’ve mixed in a little bit of paint thinner just a drop or two and it seems to do the trick. And as far as being nerdy. I’m sure all of us who frequent the site will confess to some degree of nerdyness.
