I just finished my Minicraft Spruce Goose. It was a second build for me considering that my first build was before my modeling skills were at what I consider an acceptable level. I finished it in the standard silver with standard markings. I still have the first build, and rather than chuck it in the garbage, I’m considering cleaning up the seams and doing a “what if?” version.
Any ideas? What do you think the Goose would have looked like if it had actually entered military service? Particularly, what color(s) do you think it would have been?
Well, in real life, it was begun in 1942, under a contract to complete three aircraft in 2 years time, and the impetus behind the concept was the expected need to ferry supplies to Great Britain by air across the Atlantic. If you start with those details, you have a lot of wiggle room. Depending on your imagination, there is a good selection of exterior colors (eg, North Atlantic greys, Pacific three-tone, or gloss sea blue, though that last is most boring, in my opinion) and markings (eg, roundels, roundels wth bars and red surround, bars and blue surround) to choose from. And you could come up with modifications to the aircraft itself, like adding armaments, or making it an amphibian. Anything is possible, literally.
