Spraying Future

Hey all. I have a question. I’m ready to put on the Future and i’m not sure how to go about it. Do I just airbrush it on? My other question is how many coats and how long till I can start adding decals?

I’m trying to get it done before the show this Saturday.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Medic… airbrush is fine. Depending on the paint base coat (how flat it is, etc.) a few light coats should do. Be sure to give it an “optical” test, as far as it being coated enough. What I mean is to turn the model so you can see the coverage being smooth.

Let it sit for 24 hours… before adding the decals. It is possible that it could dry beforehand, but why take chances. Better to be safe than really sorry.

Best of luck with it and the show.

Send some photos…

Thanks Bill. That’s the best answer i’ve gotten all evening. One other question. Do I need to add another coat of Future after the decals are done?

My pleasure, of course, A light sealing coat (or two) over the decals is fine. Again, let sit before you do anything else. Not sure what the subject piece is, but adding a flat coat afterwards shouldn’t be a problem. Then you can work on your weathering if needed.

Hope you do well with it…

All the best

Bill

Pardon me, I know this is a redundent question, what is the thinning ratio for Future? 50/50?

The thinning medium is Windex?

I’m going to try this with a subject for a group build and I’ve never used Future before.

Thanks.

Ok last two stupid questions for the night. How soon after that last coat (after decals) can you spray the dull coat? And when do you do weathering. I was just planning on adding some pastels to the engines (Oh it’s a MV-22 Osprey by the way) as most of these aircraft are pretty new.

Hi Mike

Not redundant at all…

The times that I have used Future, I have airbrushed (and hand brushed) full strength without thinning.

I’ve not had any issues to date. I would guess others will offer their incite to this post.

Good luck with the group build…

It’s usually thin enough to airbrush without further thinning. DO NOT thin with Windex, especially if you are applying over an acrylic base, or you will have a very bad day.

Thanks for the advice!

Stop! If you haven’t AB Future before, make sure you test on an expendable piece first. Future can be a little tricky to get right (that’s why I went back to the Testors rattle can glosscoat). You can get an orange peel effect if not laid down correctly, trust me.

I’ve been adding dot filters after a coat of Future to seal the decals and usually a dark wash to bring out panel lines etc. with water color paints ( my kids watercolors). The excess wipes off easier from the gloss. I also do some weathering after the dullcoat ,oil stains, paint chipping and the like. The pastels will probably stick better to a dull finish.

I also let any over coat Future, dullcoat or what ever dry overnight to be safe. Experience is a great teacher.

As far as Future orange peeling , the only time I ran into that , I hadn’t let the enamel base paint cure out enough. Tried to rush it. Again , a day or two dry time to be sure. Also make sure your air brush is free from residual oil based solvent if you’ve been spraying enamels.

Too often the impulse to finish leads to bad results. I haven’t really started this project yet, other than assembling resources. The GB doesn’t start until 1 May, but I want to move along and not get bogged down.

Thanks for the advice, everyone!!

Ah… that might explain things, patience has never been one of my virtues.
