Spray Booth Project Almost Complete

While at a donation center I frequent more or less now on regular basis, I stumbled upon an appliance that caught my eye , instant epiphany. I initially wanted a spray booth that was compact enough so as not to take up too much counter space in the shop. But what I came across sent me on a different tangent , one of enlightenment and possibility. It’s now close to being finished. I just need to decide what duct to go with, solid , semi rigid or flex. So here’s my take on a spray booth. Feel free to comment / ask questions.

The heart of the booth, a downdraft cook top vent rated at 650cfm. Did a test using a candle. The candles flame remained at a constant 90 deg. bend toward the vent and when blown out the fumes were evacuated instantly. Distance to the vent was 21 inches. So I think she will do the job quite nicely. The brown brackets are for mounting a hood that I am in the process of making and should help with efficiency.

6 inch duct

3 spd. fan

Cool! Does the intake have a filter to keep out paint particles? That’s the only thing I can see that raises any issues.

It does, they are hard to see but appear in the 2nd. and third pic. I used two furnace filters cut to size and placed back to back . I removed some of the grate to increase the surface area. Two brass rods secure the filter in place.

Very nice conversion. Looks like it will do the job.

Thanks fox,

I was able to add the cowl tonight.

That looks absolutely great! What’s the actual size of the painting area? I’m soooooooooo jealous.

36" x 10" and 36" x 22" with the leaf extension.

Outstanding! There aren’t too many models that can’t be painted in there. If they don’t fit in there, the only thing to do is take it to a body shop and use their spray room. [;)]

Thanks fox,

I like the braille scale for now but it is nice to know that it can accommodate larger scales if needed.
