I have been building armor models for years, and now Im venturing into aircraft. With armor models, there is a pluther of aftermarket detail sets and an umpteen amount of good quality resin figures for 1/35 scale. Though Ive found a good selection of detail sets both photo etch and resin for aircraft, its the figure selection that dissapoints me. With the fantastic selections offered by Verlinden, Warriors, and similar companies , Im not seeing much offered in 1/48 and 1/72 scale . Where are the B-17 crewman poised in action in the skies over Germany?! Or even waiting nervously by their planes for good weather?! Am I alone on this? Have I really been spoiled from the vast armor selection? Can we all cry out " we need more pilots!" and maybe someone will hear us? What do all of you experianced aircraft modelers feel about this?
I wouldn’t call myself an expert aircraft modeler but I have done several aircraft and have felt the same frustration. It seems there are only about 8 figures (pilots and ground crew) in 1/48 scale that all model makers stuff in their kits. I’ve seen the same pilot figure in about 50 diff kits and that dude with the clipboard on the ground crew, I must have about 20 of him in my spares box. I would love to put an entire crew crawling around and working on my 1/72 B-36. Maybe an engine being pulled a couple working on a troublesom landing gear. With that big bird you could have all kinds of stuff going on around her. But as you say, not much selection. I’ve never seen a ground crew all stop for a second to strike the same pose. Oh well, maybe someday.
Your troubles are through, gentlemen. Hasegawa has several different kits out for ground crews, equipment, etc in both 1/72 and 1/48 scales. Alot of the stuff is modern, but there’s also plenty of crews out there for WWII and lower. Check evilbay, or your favorite on-line catalog, if you don’t have access to a good local hobby shop. There’s actually alot out there.
Now, if only we could get them to go into 1/32…

Ive seen the ones you speak of Demono. They are pretty nice, but nothing like the 1/35 resin figures. And they do, for some reason make 1/35th scale pilots. I guess they could go with 1/32 . I have a bunch of those clip board guys too. Maybe I could put white coats and glasses on them and they couild be the engineers.?
I agree monster I asked the same question a little while back. arrggghhh!! sahickerson you might want to stick a mechanic in one of the intakes of that B-36! My dad worked on those monsters and he had to go in from the front sometimes. Once someone stole the ladder he was using and was stuck in there for a time! I did get him to pose with the one at WPAFB museum. It was great! (tail number 2220 or 2222)
