Spitfire Mk. Ia in 1/72 scale FINISHED!

As a snot-nosed kid, I built a Spitfire model. I can’t remember Which variant it was, But it was a crummy kit and my primitive modeling skills didn’t help it. I think it ended up in the trash eventually. When I started building models as an adult 10 years ago, I thought for sure I’d take another crack at a Spitfire. But for whatever reason, I never bought a kit of one! That changed last fall when I bought an Airfix kit for just under 10 bucks at my local hobby shop. Needless to say, this plane needs no introduction. It’s easily recognizable, it’s been in movies (both old and recent), and it’s even been mentioned in an Iron Maiden song. Though it’s a fairly simple kit to build, the subject matter is what makes this so exciting for me! The cockpit went together with no issues this evening. While I was waiting for paint and glue to dry, I dug out some RAF figures in my stash. I think I’ll be incorporating this bird into a diorama!

Cockpit looks cracking… the photo you’ve shared definitely puts the size into perspective!

Good luck with the rest of the build.

Looks great, looking forward to your build!

Oh gosh, I REALLY left you guys high and dry for a bit didn’t I!?! After a very busy spring and most of summer, I finished my Spitfire! All of the paints were model master colors, and I created a simple diorama using airfix RAF ground crew figures and one Pegasus dog from their farm animals set. Of course, I had to paint the dog up like my Penny here at home! The only gripe I had about the Spit kit was the machine gun cover decals. They are not flexible enough to wrap around the leading edge of the wing and I had to cut them in orde to get them to fit. Other than that it was an enjoyable build!

Oops! The last entry posted twice! Sorry folks!

Very cool! Airfix is a nice choice.

She turned out nice! That is a sweet kit. The 1/72 Airfix Hurricane is a nice one too, if you’re looking for a similar build.

Nicely done. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks everyone! And Paladin, I’ll have to check out that hurricane kit!
