Spills and Stains

I’m almost finished with my latest build - a marder ll, but I wanted to add some spills and stains in the fighting compartment. I’m already satisfied with some minor paint chipping and slight rusting I’ve completed in it - but I feel like some stains and spills will really make it look more “lived in”. However since I’ve never tried to do stains and spills before, and I REALLY don’t want to mess it up, I’m here for some advice on how to make it happen. Open to any and all input!

Thanks again!

I have generally given up on recommending techniques, but since no one is answering, I’ll bite. While I’m sure there are several other ways to do this, but here is how I make spots and stains. Make sure your basic paint job is sealed with a clear top coat and well cured, otherwise this technique could be hazardous to the underlying finish. Wet the area where you want the spots/stain with a little bit of mineral spirits/paint thinner, but do not leave a puddle of thinner. Thin a small amount of oil paint, (black for oil stains, burnt sienna for rust stains, or whatever color you choose) until it is quite thin, but not as thin as a wash. Using a small brush, dab some very small spots in a random pattern onto the wet area. The oil paint will start to run and disperse into the thinner. After the first application has spread out, re-apply a little more paint, as this will help build up a stain of varying color density. If the effect is too dark or too large, you can use a clean brush with with a little thinner to soften the stain or remove it completely and start over. If the stain is on a vertical or inclined surface, use a wet brush to blend the stain downwards and fade it into the surrounding area. Practice on some scraps first and experiment before you apply this technique to your model.
