Special Request build, La-5 FN*** COMPLETED***

Thanks Knox! This is sure fun, but painting with a brush is a perishable skill, and I’m sure noticing my lack of practice in this particular art. Maybe paints have changed, maybe brushes have changed, but I don’t remember having to do multiple coats like this to get a nice proper coverage on a subject like this as I used to before I owned and used an airbrush. Ah well.

She looks good to me! I don’t see any issues in your photos.

Thanks Gamera. My quality control on this one is about the same as the Soviet’s… lol! [;)]

And the basic camo colors are all on now

decals tomorrow….

Great subject Stik. Not one you see too often. Your nephew is a lucky kid.

I LIKE it!!! [Y]

Gamera & Lawdog, thanks guys!

LD, how can you say no to a little kid in your family who asks you to build him an airplane? Aside from getting me out of my modeling doldrums and building again, it’s a great way to make room in my stash for the better Zvezda La-5FN kit… [whstl]

He is going to be one happy lad! The memories this generates for him and you both are the kind that can’t be replaced.[Y]

Gil, I’m pretty sure that he’ll be quite jazzed

Decals are now on. So many to apply… all 10 of them… lol! 6 Red stars, 2 Bort numbers, and the “boosted” stencils on the cowling. Amazingly the Hobbycraft decals worked very well!

Just gotta add the final bits, do a sealing top coat, and this will be all finished…

Yes. That looks great. You are all warmed up for the weekend GB. Thanks again for posting and have a safe trip.

Edit: I’ve condensed my stash to only planes I want to build. (Very limited variety, but lots of each one). Now I feel the need to add one of these. It really is an attractive plane.

Ya know, this would be an ideal kit for the weekend GB. Too bad that this project didn’t fall during the timeframe of that GB. [;)] And yes, it is a sharp looking fighter!

Of course a Hobbycraft I-16 might work too… [^o)]

Nice. Never brush painted a plane before. I’ve seen some amazing results, but understand that it takes up to five times longer than airbrushing. I’ve always liked the La-5, but I’d take a 109G-6 any day. : )

Is the entire plane brush painted or just the base coat? Very smooth finish if brush painted. I miss the days of picking up a brush and going to town. Nowadays my mojo gets deflated thinking about using and cleaning the AB.

Andrew and Chad, thank you.

Andrew, I hadn’t brush painted an airplane in over thirty years, so this was a definite refresher course on that lost skill. It takes more time to apply the paint, but there is far less cleaning afterwards, so time wise they balance out somewhat. But as much as I do like 109s, I have a soft spot for these Russian fighters.

Chad, I did indeed brush paint the whole thing. Up close you can tell from the texture of the paint. I feel ya about the cleaning of the airbrush taking the wind out of your sails. I get that too.

So here it is, all finished in a bit over 80 hours. Hobbycraft’s 1/48 La-5FN built OOB. I did modify a few parts with files or filler here and there, but nothing beyond that. I also used the kit decals, which surprisingly worked very well.

Now it’s all packaged up for travel to my great nephew and delivery to him over the weekend

That looks real good, he will be happy

I’m certain your great nephew is going to love this one.

Tony & Chad, thank you. Yeah, I think you guys are right about him liking this one.

Very nice, brush painting is not a lost art after all! I predict lots of smiles and airplane noises as soon as he receives this.[:D]

Super nice work! I haven’t brush-painted anything but figures in years. BSYamato used to brush-paint his 1/72nd aircraft and they looked great- he even pre-shaded them with a brush.

I’m sure your nephew is going to be thrilled!

Coming along fast Carlos! Looks great.

I still have some Poly S, is that Poly Scale the same with diffrent packaging?

Great job! Can not believe that it was brush painted and that it’s a Hobbycraft kit.
