Hey guys, my latest project is a South African G6 “Rhino” 155mm SPA, Cromwell Models’ 1/76th scale resin kit. Tons of resin dust later, it’s ready to be painted!
Yes, it’s my normal photo quality.
The second one compares the Rhino to the great big Grant tank, and the Grant is 1/72nd scale, not 1/76th. The Rhino is huge.
The kit is an ok representation of the vehicle. Problem is, there are grab handles and railings they don’t give you, and I can’t find any good references to show what they look like (except glimpses, like the pics on the Army Technology site), so I’m going to be happy with just putting the resin together and that’s that.
Next up, the paint job! It’s an interesting vehicle and has this funky camo scheme. I may try to find a 1/76th scale Rhino (the animal) and have them posed together in a little diorama – how often can you have the vehicle posed with the animal its named after?
The G6 is a damn fine gun – we were afraid that the Iraqis had some in ODS, and they way outranged our own artillery, back in the early 90s, that is – it’s got a range of 50km, which might not be too far in 2005 (current range is 53.6km). As it turns out, I don’t think the two they had ever got used.
The South Africans have around 50 of them, and some Gulf States have bought more (around 100 more), but the South Africans actually have a pretty good army.
Nice gun Larry! Thanks for the comparison photo. Good luck finding the rhino to match. Usually the 1/72 model dwarfs the 1/76. I have a 1/76 King tiger in my queue right now. Needless to say it is very strange to see a 1/72 sherman that is about the same size as the king tiger.
I have to agree, the G-5 and G-6 are great guns.
The Rhino is a great piece. I first read about it in Jane’s, which may be a really good source for your railing and handle issue.
A few years ago the French Ceasar was supposed to be the best wheeled 155, I dont think anyone took the Rhino into account. It was the first gun with position and self lay.
Your “little” Rhino looks impressive.
Nice job Larry. Looking forward to seeing the “Rhino” all painted up! For a wheeled vehicle, this thing is huge, and from what little I’ve seen of it on TV it’s very rugged, and capable of moving quite swiftly across the African plain. Semper Fi, mike
It’s a kind of cocoa brown overall, with olive drab and khaki camo pattern over it.
Thanks for the kind words, guys. It’s a nice little kit, and goes together ok despite being around 10 years old. Some of the details are crude, but it gets the basic shape right.
