Modelers, I’m looking for an around-the-house of cheap source of fine mesh. I’m trying to duplicate an aluminum mesh on the A-10 cannon drum ends. I’ve thought of panty hose, but I doubt that would hold up.
Any ideas?
A small sieve, as used for tea, is made with fine mesh. There a differnet types of sieves, for fine mesh, use the plastic ones.
Wedding toule works well too. You can find it at fabric stores in packages of circular pieces several inches in diameter.

As long as you’re in the kitchen section, you might also want to take a look at spatter guards… I don’t know what they’re actually called, but it’s basically a 10" or 12" round piece of mesh with a small handle; you put it over a skillet when cooking something like fish or hamburger so that the grease doesn’t spatter everywhere, but you can still see what you’re cooking. Wal-mart sells them for ~ $2.
I’m not sure exactly how fine you are looking for, but I had some old screen off the windows of the house, which made great chain link fence…probably too big for what you are doing, but I was bored and thought I would throw that in!!!
Go to a full service hardware store ( preferably an older, long-established , non-franchised store ) and ask if they have strainer mesh in bulk form. I found some in my small-town hardware store that is perfect. It’s classified like cotton cloth— 60 to 80 threads per inch. AND IT’S BRASS. But it is a little expensive. The roll was about 12 inches wide and several feet long, BUT it could be bought by the running inch ( at one dollar per inch ). [:O] I bought about 4 inches. [:D]
Save yourself some time and some money. Look in your phonebook for silkscreeners, screenprinters, t-shirts-custom printed or something like that. I am a printer and the mesh on these screens is very fine, some as high as 330 lines per inch and it is made from nylon, not metal. They will either sell you some new mesh if they have any or they may just give you some off an old ripped screen. It may be colored from the ink that was last used, but if you were planning on painting it anyways, that doesn’t matter.
