Something A Little Dirty

O.K. Get your minds out of the gutter !

Work on my current projects haven’t been progressing at my usual pace (darn summer cold !). I’ve managed to get my Accurate Miniatures Il-2 cockpit painted, washed, and drybrushed. Then I got an idea…[swg]

I’ve had some earth-tone pastels lying around for a while now, but never used them. I figured this would be a good aircraft on which to experiment. I added some red-brown & black pastels to the cockpit floor and seat. I’ll also add some to the gear wells. I don’t plan on beating the [censored] out of this plane, but I’m also going to try a base. I have some static grass, and I want to try making a rutted, uneven ground for it.

Again, thanks for letting me share the build with you !

The tank behind the pilot’s seat is not yet glued. I did some “chipping” around the filler cap, but I think I’ll also add some fluid staining.

Looks good so far, Pix.
Can’t wait to see it finished.

Looking good!

Good job as always pix.

Masterful work there Pix. Should make for a very convincing display.

Great work Pix. Glad to see you posting again. Began to woder where you went.

The cockpits you post always look so good. Wish I had the patience.

Same here, Don!
Great work, Pix!

Truly impressive cockpit you have there! Very effective (because it’s still subtle) weathering. My hat’s off to you sir![bow]

Brilliant! it’s amazing what can be done for a cockpit with just a little patience!
Are all those parts OOB, or did you use AM parts (the seat belts look like PE to me…)? I’m studying up to build my first Accurate Miniatures kit, and i just wanted to ask how the IL-2 goes together?

Thanks chopperfan, Chris, 9x19mm, Swanny, Rick, dagne, J-Hulk, Filibert, & shrikes !

shrikes - there’s quite a bit of PE in the cockpit. The instrument panel & the box below it, rudder pedals, control levers, wheel, plates & crank on the left console, a couple of levers and a brace at the bottom of the stick, the lever to the pilot’s right, and instruments & plates on both cockpit sidewalls. There’s also a lot for the landing gear & wheel wells.
The fit on the kit is great. I never follow instructions for assembly sequence, though. I always dryfit to determine how I want to build it. I inspect a dry fitted seam under magnification, and trim (if necessary) to get a flush fit. This avoids a LOT of fit problems.

The wheel wells & gear legs are painted, washed, & drybrushed also. I’ll be adding pastels and assembling them today. I’ll post pics when they’re done.

Thanks again !

Looks sweet!!! You are definately a master!!! Next time you shouldn’t trick me though, I was hoping for another of those Victoria Secret links!!! LOL [:P][;)][:D]

Pix, not your usual pace?!
I suppose that means it’ll take three weeks for you to complete. [;)]

Another outstanding build. Can’t wait to see this one finished, but I guess I’ll have to!

That pastel dirt is a very nice effect Pix. Really great start.

Thank you kik, Mojo, & madda !

Mojo - I didn’t go near the bench for about a week. Usually, I’m there about six hours or so a day. If I didn’t have to wait for paint to cure, I could probably get a lot more done. That’s probably why I try to have three or more going at the same time.

Thanks again !

I got the gear bays together today, after applying the pastels. The gear aren’t glued yet, and I still have to add the outer lower wing panels. The retractor arms for the gear doors were too short, so I added some copper wire to reach the bay ceiling. There’s a lot of PE in the bays, and the hydraulic lines are solder. The “cannister” filter on the right wing will be replaced with PE screen & frame.

Thanks for taking a peek !

Nice

Thanks kinekx !

I’ll probably have the paint on this one by mid-week. I’ll post more pics then.
Thanks again !

Thats a sweet looking dirty bird.

James

very nice cockpit. I like the look of the pastel colouring.
