I’ve only been back into modeling since january and have already spent 350 bucks. This includes two models, paints, oils and an airbrush. There are about ten more tanks I would like to pruchase. I’m addicted. Some body stop me before my wife leaves me. Maybe we could form the MAA , “Modelers Anonymous Association” ,for addicted modelers. I’ll have to get a second job to support my hobby. I already feel the need for a Tiger I fix. My hands are trembling…must buy more.
I know what you mean, man! two years into the hobby, and already invested 3 grand into it! been trying to save for an airbrush, but the urge to buy models kills me!
It’s not just you, it’s all of us. When I started building again I promised myself that I would only buy a kit after I finished building a kit. A few years and 300+ kits later that promise is long gone. If your wife has something she likes to do (watching t.v, reading or a hobby of her own), try building in the same room as her. At the very least she won’t see you disappear into another room. Or ask her if you can build something for her.
you’re in the wrong place if you are looking for help. This place is populated with people who would sell their organs for model money. Now if you are looking for excuses to buy those ten tanks, we can help
For me it started off with a couple of kits I had stashed, then I went to the shop to buy some supplies and came home with a couple of more kits, then I learned about Hobby Lobbies 40% off sales and went crazy, then I started looking around on ebay and found a whole bunch of “really good deals”, and now here I am surrounded by over 100 kits with several more of those “really good deals” on the way, I went to the hobby shop the other day for something and they were having a “clearance sale”, I don’t need to tell you how that went.
My wife is really cool about it though, I always get real serious and tell her it is my responsibility as an American to help stimulate the economy.
The way I look at it is you don’t wait until your heart stops before a heart operation, or you don’t wait until you are completely out of groceries before you buy dinner. You have to have your basics (enough work for at least one month of straight modeling) and the rest is just “extras”. Ask your wife if she would actually run out of lipstick before buying a new tube. Also ask her how she feels about waiting to run out of toilet paper before stocking up and tell her that buying models is the same thing.[^]
That was my intention, to buy after I built one. Haha, that lasted a whole month. Now I scout for good sales and am starting to eye ebay. Ohoh. I figure I hope to model until I’m an old man, so buy them cheap now and squirrel them away for later. The price of kits will only go up.
Ebay…great place to find models. It’s hell on your wallet. This I know to be true.
Jason, any idea how much a good kidney can bring on the black market? [:D]
Isn’ t that kinda like saying “stop it some more?”. I think we’re all with you!! I’ve got 5 kits coming and an airbrush, That’s not counting the 2 Hetzers I just got and the Pz.1. Oh ya and the dig. camera I got to post here, ----I mean to take family shots. Yea right!!! It’s horrible man, but compared to some habits I used to have this one’s pretty healthy. My wife left along time ago so I don’t have to worry about it—unless she finds her way back.(shudder)![xx(]
I started back in the hobby seriously last year, at that time I had about 20 odd kits stashed. Some AC, Armour and Sci Fi. Well after this weekend I’ll be over 200+ kits [:p].
My wife is really good about it, kind of makes it a running joke about it, she even comes with me to the LHS and picks them out with me. Guess I’m lucky because she works in the aviation industry so she likes planes, I have even built her a model of the Enterprise 1701 to sit on her desk at work and another is on the way F22 Falcon.
She is a avid scrapbooker so we have a single room in our house that we share to do our hobbies in. [:D]
And since she needs pictures to do her hobby I get to go to all the shows and museums I want to.
[:)]
Yes I’m addicted to buying kits and tools, but at least I have the support of my wife, she helps bring the bags in from the car… [:D]
My woman says the other day “I need new shoes” I says “What’s wrong with those?” She says “They’re dirty”, I says “How many pairs of dirty shoes are under the bed?” she says “Probably about 10”, I says “Cool”. End of conversation.
I had the same problem (is it a problem?) with Games Workshop figures. Im semi cured in that I dont but as much stuff now but onlt cos Im buying Scale model tanks now instead. I do try to stick to the no more till I finish thing, Which Im getting better at. My wife , being a drug and alcohol counselor understands my addiction , and contrary to all her teachings actually buys me more kits (maybe shes trying to make me OD). On a side note who else makes up reasons to go down town to get to the LHS?
[:I]
That first year or two will have you buying just the basics ,various paints , brushes,decals/ transfers,airbrush/compressor, ( don’t even think about using those air cans for airbrushing they get VERY pricey real fast and you cannot control the pressure on them . The basics cost WAYYYYY more than the actual kits .
Once you get geared up , it gets cheaper , ( unless you begin collecting kits as many do , Dragon is to blame here with limited edition releases ,grab em’ while they are out !)
I buy what I plan on building in the near future , I can get almost any old kit on EBAY if they discontinue it .
