So what are we going to call them

We have:
Micro scale 1/144
Braille scale 1/72 -1/76
Standard scale 1/35
Macro scale 1/16-1/25

Quarter scale for 1/48 just smells to wingy thingyish. So what do you guys reckon? (Tigerman. Be nice)

Mini-scale?
Off-scale?

well they’re right between standard and braille so why not call them stail?

In Japanese, they’re being called yon-pachi.

Yon=4
Hachi (Pachi in this combination)=8
Yonpachi=48

Like “quarter-scale”, however, that yonpachi was originally used for 1/48 aircraft.

How about “Substandard Scale?”
Just kidding! I like 1/48 just fine! It’s just that if 1/35 is “Standard Scale,” then 1/48 would logically be…well, you know.

Seriously though…hmm…drawing a blank here…

OK, next contestant, please! [;)]

How about the “what was Tamiya thinking scale?”[:P]

I’m not really sure what to call it, however anything that isn’t to wingy thingyish would be good.

“differently abled standard scale”?

Hey tis quarter scale. O Guage, or to us 1/72 types everything large is blimp scale.

lol had another thought, with all the unwarranted abuse this scale of armour is getting why not.
Pet-hate scale
Damn-now I have to get another closet scale
I’m a crusty bad tempered modeler and I have to bitch about this scale
completely irational modelers reaction scale
Oh i love to bitch and this scale is new so hehehe flame on…

Sorry I was bored and couldnt resist

How about calling them Buzz scale? They sure are stirring up a hornet’s nest of controversy.

How about mid-life crisis scale? (48…get it?) Sorry.[:-^]

I think we should ask the airplane modelers, they have 1/48. what do they call it? any airplane modler also like armors?

A lot of very good suggestions here!

1/48 is between B 1/72 and S 1/35, why do not we call it B.S scale.[:D]

Modellers have been calling 1:48 ‘O’ Scale for years.

NTM

LOL!!! This thread is a good laugh. I always wondered why “quarter” scale is 1/48. In math a quarter is 1/4. But oh well. Also Petbat, you forgot 1/285. Supermicro? Elven armor?? Eye damaging??? Someone in my club did an OIF dio with a bunch of Bradleys, Abrams, and T-72’s in 285. It was about half the size of a posterboard and very cool.

LOL All I can come with so far is Wingy Scale, because 1/48 is considered the standard scale over there. Sorry, not very original, but I guess it’s fitting. I’ll put on my thinking hat. [D)]

Mid Scale?

The scale started out as 1 inch=48 inches, or 1"=4 feet, hence the name 1/4 or quarter scale.

R/C aircraft builders came along later and used a “true” 1 inch=4 inches scale to build their planes. Now quarter scale refers to those R/C aircraft built literally at one fourth of the size of the actual prototype.

I wonder if many of you realize that 1/48 scale came along before 1/35 scale in the armor world. Aurora originally produced kits in this scale in the 1950s and well into the 70s. The use of this scale wasn’t Aurora’s downfall though. They concentrated on figure kits tied to movies (monsters), comic books (super heroes) and other genres that require licensing and royalties and cut into profits. Plus they were located in metropolitan NYC, a high cost of living area.

Renwal made kits in 3"/8’ scale which translates to 1/32 scale. Monogram did both a mixture of 1/32 and 1/35 (some kits have appeared in boxes with either scale at one time or another). Revell made 1/40 scale kits.

Tamiya entered the armor modeling world with 1/48 scale kits in the late 60s and early 70s. They were motorized and had rubber band tracks. Some of the kits they produced were an M60 (only plastic “Slick 60” made to date), M60A1, M60A1E1 (pre-production M60A2), JGSDF Type 71, Swedish S-Tank, T-34/76 and they did a Soviet assault gun based on the T-34 (SU-85?). That last one is the only one I don’t have, and the Swedish S-Tank I have is one of the Academy copies of the Tamiya kit. Still got the kits on hand if any of you don’t believe these old 1/48 scale Tamiya kits existed.

Tamiya also did the T-92 US airborne tank in a joint venture with Hawk (the company absorbed by Testors). I’ve not been able to locate one of these at a reasonable price.

I don’t know why Tamiya is going back to 1/48 scale, and I don’t really care. I have built the Kettenkraftrad and Goliath as well as the Afrika Korps Kubelwagen. Very nice kits, quantum leaps beyond the old Bandai kits of the 1970s. I’ve got the Tiger I and Schwimmwagen, but have not built either kit (I’m a little behind due to group builds).

Why will I buy/build the 1/48 scale kits? I’ve got a decent amount of old 1/48 scale Aurora, Bandai, Tamiya, Academy, Zhengdefu, Fuman and Monogram kits I’ve collected up over the years and saved from my childhood.

I’m pretty sure the first armor kit I had was an Aurora 1/48 IS III if they did indeed make one. I also had Cornelius from the Planet of the Apes and the Mummy, also Aurora. Man, I feel old now! LOL

How about " if we dont do something fast dragon will put us under" scale. Or just plain desperation scale. Saw a swimmawegen today at the LHS. cost the same as the 35. hummmm.

OK Rob fess up. How much space does your collection occupy?
