Smoothing and removing excess Mr. Surfacer 500

What is the best material to use on a Q tip to remove and smooth Mr Surfacer 500 when using it to fill small gaps. I’ve heard that lacquer thinner is the way to go. Before I start rubbing lacquer thinner over nice surface detail I’d like some confirmation or alternatives.

Thank you in advance,

Tom

I use regular ISP alcohol on a q tip. I like to use the long medical type q tips as the cotton bud seems firmer. You could also invest in some cheap kids artist brush packs from the dollar store. You can trim them to fit.

Ruining one kit at a time.

I use Gunze Mr. Color thinner.

Thank you both. I tried the 91% Iso alcohol last night. It worked great. I’m going to pick up some Mr. Color thinner at Free Time Hobbies tomorrow and try it for comparision purposes.

Thanks again,

Tom

Alcohol and a Q-tip work for me.

Is the Mr Color Thinner Lacquer ?

I don’t know for sure, but it may be a lacquer. I’m going to try the Mr. Color thinner on a test piece just for comparison purposes. Thanks again, Tom

Always use the manufacturer’s thinner. In this case, Gunze Mr. Color Lacquer thinner.

I always use the mfg’s thinner when thinning paint for painting. It’s always seemed like inexpensive insurance to me. I’ll be interested to see what the results are tomorrow when using it to smooth the Mr. Surfacer.

Thanks,

Tom

That rule of thumb is good for thinning, but to remove the excess Mr Surfacer, alcohol is just fine.
