A Marx
Firstly, I don’t want to give the impression that I am an expert, I would never (intentionally)come off like that. I am dedicated to the industry and tank development, because it was my career. I worked in the field for many years, but alas no more, my aim is/was to share, not to lecture. I certainly respect the viewpoints offered by knowlegeable individuals such as yourself. Again, my aim was not to “trump” your statements. (Peace!)
My previous post was not necessarily directed toward you, other than to clarify the latest double penetrator with deploying fins, you are obviously well informed on the subject matter.
The inference here ( or at least the way I read it) was that rifled sabot was “spun”…so I included the note. Gino, nothing against you buddy, I know your level of expertise on these matters.
crockett,
I think I should apologize for my last post - it looks rather rude in retrospect, which was not my intention.
Besides, compared to me, you are an expert, having actually worked in the field.
Compare that with my nine months of pushing paper (literally - I got to run the copy shop).
It’s all good my friend…just part of the hobby…challenging discussions are healthy and provide us with the opportunity to learn, thanks for your response.
From personal exerience I have fired HEAT, HEP, WP, SABOT, APFSDS , DU APFSDS, and anti personal ammo for the 105 mm. Good, bad, or ugly in combat where my fanny is on the line, give me DU APFSDS every time. Every tank I saw hit was a kill. When examined the DU went completely through no matter what the angle of impact. Through the front slope, the engine, out the back and into the sunset. I have seen it go through the turret , breech, and out the other side of the turret. I looked at a T 62 that the SABOT hit the top of the turret between a 5 and 10 degree angle and carved a valley across the turret roof, entered near the center of the turret, carved a grouve across the turret ceiling, and exited out of the side of the loaders hatch. I never saw a round bounce off or was deflected. When you find a round that will cross the top of a tank then turn down and go through the top then I might be willing to for go DU. Now as an environmentalist and or health professional I might be concerned about the aftermath. Haul off the wrecks and try and find the spent DU rounds.[2c]
