Has anyone fitted a smoke generator to their AFV ? I’ve had a look on the Web and there are a number of places where you can get them from - mostly designed for model locomotives, but I’m sure they’d work in my 1/16 Tamiya with a little modification. I’m particularly interested in how they would be powered. Also, I’ve read that they use a solvent based distillate - will this cause problems (Don’t want a lovely engine smoke effect and then the tank to fall to bits 'cause it dissolves the cement !).
Any info and advice greatly appreciated.

(P.S. - in one of my previous posts I mentioned that my tank would have a ‘fit’ every now and again - well what a complete plank I am - the antenna was not screwed into the RC unit properly - screwed down tight and all is now sweetness and light - d’oh)

I think the best way to check on how the smoke generators are powered is to go to your local model RR store. I’m sure something could be jerry rigged. They do get warm though, so you might want to insulate them with something like wood so the plastic wont melt. As far as the stuff used to generate the smoke, I doubt that this would be a problem. Remember, many model RR engines are also made out of plastic and many are painted by the individual. At most, I would say, make sure you have a clear coat over the model, and you should be ok.
I think you’re right on there, Eric. Usually, the smoke juice gets loaded through the smokestack, and I’m sure that many times it gets all over the outside of the locomotive with no harmful effects. I don’t hink you’d have any trouble, Bids, and welcome to the forum.
Well, I paid them a visit today and had a look at the smoke generators they had in stock (Seuthe ?). The smoke output was puny - even with their largest units - I’d get a better effect by blue-tacking two lit Marlboro’s to the arse of my tank Oh well - my Tigger will have to be a healthy non-smoker
I understand, from a post I got on what 6 year old kids can do, that if you mix brake fluid with Clorox, it makes a LOT of smoke!! lol (Don’t know about the heat output, though!) Notice, this is a disclaimer…I take NO responsibility for any damage done to a model, house, driveway, or anything else as a result of this post!!!
Right wipw - I tried your advice, and added some weedkiller and sugar to beef-up the effect. There is now a ten feet crater where my workshop used to be, my neighbours extension is ablaze and the dog has just ran down the street with its tail on fire. When I explained to the firemen that all I was doing was adding an effect to my model tank, they called the local asylum, and I am now sitting in the back seat of a Police car in a straight-jacket. You’ll be hearing from my lawyers.
