SMJ's Weathering Steps, a Quick Reference Guide for the Workbench

HOLD THE PHONE…Let’s get some things cleared up quick! bbrowniii, it sounds like your on the post-shading portion, I thought you were asking about dry brushing…sorry[:D] Post-shading is done from the airbrush with acrylics. It would be helpful if you copy the step from my list as part of your question next time…thanks.

As far as dry-brushing, I use oils. This is a new discovery for me but they FAR outweigh acrylics, IMO. Oils dry MUCH slower, they don’t gunk up and you can mix ANY color. They also dry very flat and thin. The set of oils I bought for $20 has about 20 colors. They are the smaller tubes but plenty to last a long time.

I’d really like to try this oil-drybrush technique…sadly, I don’t think my paint mixing skills (re:colorblind [X-)]) would be up to par.

If I WERE to give it a shot, what colors are you using to form the basis of your “arsenal”? And how exact do your mixes need to be when doing the drybrushing? Is “close” close enough? I.E., just successively lighter versions of the base color?

dupes: I just started a new thread on using oil paint. It’s a WIP but it’ll answer your questions as I add to it!

Sounds good. I’ll check it out!

SMJ,

OK, I think I am trackin’ with ya now. Just to clarify, what I was specifically refering to with my original question regarding one/two shades lighter was the above step.

P.S. You should be honored - I used my 1000th post on you!!! [party]

Boyd,

Congrats on breaking the 1k barrier! [party]
