I picked up the BF-109 offered by 21st Century Toys. I didnt know they made models, but after looking inside the box(I work at wal-mart in the toys…so i had access…lol) I decided the detail was good and you cant beat the price.
After getting the propeller finished I had the impulsive idea to put a motor in it. But with the way its built it was near impossible to get the pin out of the propeller. Broke the post from the base and cut my fingers a few times in the process [B)] I snatched a motor out of an old Playstation controller(used for the vibration feature) It is less than an inch in diameter and should fit snuggly in the front once i clear out the plastic.
Does anyone know if other modeling companies offer a spinner base in 1/32 scale that would work? I contacted 21st Century trying to see if I could get a replacement, but I would like to find an alternative, “just in case.”
Also, is there a page with tips or do yall have any tips on putting a small motor in a plastic kit?
I’m trying to figure out a way to hide the wires and Im going to connect them to the battery under the base I will make for it.
I put a motor from Dynamic Scale Modeling in a P-51 not too long ago. This link will take you to my site where I show the installation. Not everything will apply but hopefully some of it will help.
I’m working on the same 109 right now. There is definitely alot to clear out of the engine area. Careful of the instructions though as they are somewhat vague about some things, such as the orientation of the air filter. The fit between the main wing assembly and the body is a little hinky too. I had to shim at the front root of the right wing due to a gap.I shouldn’t complain, not a bad a kit for $10. It’s actually been a fun build for me seeing as I don’t usually build piston engine planes. It’s been a filler while in between steps on my Flanker. Look forward to seeing yours when it done!
haha, Ive actually seen that page on the P-51 before. And I found the DSM page before, but couldnt remember where it was…I bookmarked the page now…lol
I was thinking about pulling the wires through the wheel struts, but I will have to wait until I can get a dremel tool. I will be able to easily clear out the front of the plane and get the precision drill bit set to drill a hole in the wheel struts. Since this was a $10 model I figured this would be a good practice plane to put a motor in. Too bad the spinner base broke though. Hopefully I will hear back from 21st Century and have it replaced
In the meantime I will re-focus on my main build. My Hasegawa “Glamorous Glen III” P-51D, with aftermarket cockpit. Ive had it since 2003 and was when I first joined this forum, though under the name of Shark708, but that name was deleted(I believe) since I had to stop building the P-51 due to not having the right paints and not having a local hobby shop and I didn’t have the time to sign in to this forum. But Im in college and have a local hobby shop in town. [:D] I now have the paints I need to finish it. I just have to get a correct fit of the cockpit in the body, put it together, put a primer coat of gloss black, apply the Alclad, then decals and canopy.
It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words…so here’s a small book full of pics
This is my 3rd electric model with everything electrical being scratch-built. I also am putting the finishing touches to my Grumman AA1A “Alley Cat” but Dynamic Scale Models took care of the electronics on that one.
I still havent heard from 21st C about replacing that spinner base, so this will have to take a back seat until its fixed. If we get anymore in at wal-mart I just might buy another, for the base, and use the base from this kit for the other…even though the spinner will have to be glued down, but I have to think of something. lol
