SM-79s head for the paint room -- finally

I’ve lost track of how long these two have been on my bench but they are finally heading for paint. This is the Trumpeter kit and it jusy got some interior green for the frame lines before the primer goes on. The Classic Airframes kit is right behind it. By this time tomorrow both will be primed and looking for color.

Got to get these done so I can work on some of the other cool stuff waiting for my attention like the Classic Airframes EE Canberra that just arrived today.

Hmmm I sort of remember you starting them[;)]

What’s up with your He-115? Mine has gone from the back burner to whatever the next step away from the bench is.

It’s still there, need to complete the wiring on the second engine then build the engine mounts. The Falcon canopy set finally arrived for it and that is a huge upgrade from the kit canopy.

Here’s my AIRFIX SM79 (1:72 scale) made about 18 months ago. I used Misterkit acrylics and the torpedo came from the Italeri kit. Decals are from an old ESCI sheet for the ‘Electric Man’ used off Sicily in WW2.

Welcome to the forum. That looks like it came out very nicely. Two things: how did you do the camo pattern and while you are correct with the torpedo installation you should have the other set of hardware there even though it was not commonly used. Overall it looks like a top notch model.

What? Swanny builds airplanes?[%-)] Nah Just messin! Are you a little intimidated by the Italian camo? I know I’d be… I haven’t even painted a mottle on a german plane yet. Make sure you put lots of photos when you get it done. Now, about the new kit you just got in. You know, if you ever want to clear some closet space out, my address is 7409…[B)]

finnly getting there

Hi Swanny,

Many thanks for your welcome here. I usually live at

The SM79 was hand painted using a Winsor Newton sable brush No.3 and Misterkit acrylics. I find that Misterkit acrylics are far more suitable for airbrush work rather than hand painting. What other hardware are you refering to please.?

I am looking forward to seeing your SM79 finished. It looks good so far.

All the best,

Ron.

The SM.79 was originally outfitted to handle two torpedos but operational aircraft generally only carried one in the Port station. The hardware for the Starboard torpedo normally was left in place even though it was not used. Just a little piece of Ali D’ Italia trivia.

Thanks Swanny for that. Yes the original Airfix SM79 has very ‘primitive’ examples of two torpedoes and fittings. The fit of the wings to fuselage on the underside is poor also, so when I built it I filled all the joint lines and the torpedo hardware mounting slots. Just replaced the port one with the Italeri kit torpedo and its mounting. And yes, you are quite right, I should have replaced the starboard side torpedo mountings.

All the best,

Ron.

Looking forward to seeing both these birds complete.

What camo schemes are you going for?
