Finally broke my slump and got some work done on my Phantom. This kit had sat unfinished for a year collecting dust. I made some good progress over the last few day and I am now ready to start painting this BEAST.
Here are a couple of pictures. They are not that good so please be kind, my camera isn’t that great.

Thanks Krow! Glad to have my groove back again. Just laid down the first coat of primer paint and hopefully will have primary colors on soon. I’m getting really excited about finishing it now.

Nice stuff so far,it’s good you felt like starting again.Like I said in the previous thread,there is no sense forcing it.When it doesn’t feel good stop for a while,it’s supposed to be a hobby.Do it only when it’s enjoyable,otherwise it becomes like our real jobs !! keep up the pics.
Thank for the compliments fellas. I just finished painting primer coat and now ready to start preshading later tonight. Will post more pictures later. Hope to break out the airbrush this weekend and get some colors on it.
Anthony, I think I was just burned out. When I started my Phantom last year I had most of it built and then moved into a new apartment and was trying to get settled in. I had hoped that once I had gotten settled I would get back to it but never did. I got really busy with furnishing. painting walls, and making my new home comfortable for me. When I got all this done I was just to burned out to do anything else so the model just sat on my workbench. I lost all desire to work on it. Yes, it did start to seem like work and no longer a fun. I’m just happy to have my groove back and looking forward to completing my Mean Marine MiG Killing Machine.
I’ve seen a lot worse pictures! I would suggest, if possible, that you move the model onto an empty table when taking pictures of it.
The build looks most excellent. I’m glad you were able to come out of your slump.
Oh, and is the shoe-box being used in the painting process? If so, how?

My cam is just a 3.1mp I got as a hand me down, its a lousy camera to take pics with. It has no VGA mode for close up pics and in macro mode it takes even worse pictures. So, its not location, its a crappy camera. Yes, I am using the shoe box as a paint stand. I put a few 2" tape strips on the edges and over lap the open area with more tape for holding the model on top and cut U shape grooves to rest the nose and tail on. Its a bit difficult to explain but I’ve been painting models this way for years and its cheaper than buying a spray paint booth.
You have given me an idea. With the box my latest Tower Hobbies order came in, and some modified plastic sheeting, I’m going to make a similar rig for painting. Since my models will all fit in the box, and I paint exclusively with acrylics these days, I won’t be forced to paint outside unless I make a mess. No more complaining about lack of good painting weather!
Also, I forgot to ask what scale that F-4 is. It appears to be 1:32; am I correct?
Its actually 1:48 scale. The kit is the old Monogram F-4J MiG Killer “Showtime 100” kit that is now out of production. I found the kit on E-vile-bay. It had missing parts and took me a long time to find replacement parts. Thankfully with help from many fellow modelers here I was able to get all the parts I needed.
I have two boxes I use for model painting, the shoe box is for 1:48 and a larger box for 1:32. Both work very well for either indoor or outdoor painting. Glad I was able to inspire you! [:D]
Excellent that you are back in the game. I’ve been on a business trip the past week and looked forward to getting back to some leisure time and sitting down with a cup of coffee and working on a current build.
During my trips, I often try to find local hobby shops, but I am saddened that they are few and far between. I was in St. Louis and found a nice one just west of town along I-70 called Mark Twain Hobby Shop. Lots of people in the store and I always find that nice.
Now, just need to get the honey-do list out of the way that build up while I was gone an then back to the bench!!!
Hutch, Thank for the compliment. If you ever make a trip to Columbus, Ohio, I know of at least 3 places to buy model kits and supplies. There is Hobby Town USA, Hobby Lobby, Micheal’s, and if you check local directory there are two mom and pop hobby shops there too. I do most of my buying online since I live out here in the sticks without a car.
I hear you…thanks for the offer…I am originally from northern Ohio–Cuyahoga Falls to be exact–a suburb of Akron. I go up that way often. I have to drive through Columbus during my move back to Virginia this summer from Colorado. I too buy a lot via internet, but feel the need to patronize the LHS. We have two HobbyTowns in Colorado Springs that are run from some very nice folks. I, too, often make the trek to Denver to the great Colpar store.
As for your F-4 build, I am watching with much interest. I have two on the shelf of the RF-4C type. I used to exploit the tac recce imagery in Germany from Zweibruken based aircraft some 25 years ago. I hope to get some paint on my Israeli Kinetic Sufa, today.

Hobbyland was the mom and pop shops I was thinking of but couldn’t remember the name. I went there about a year ago with my girlfriend and asked for you and they said you were not working that day, I would have enjoyed meeting you.
I made some steady progress again on my Phantom last night and today. I was able to get a primer paint coat on, did some preshading and masking. Today I broke out the airbrush to clean and set up. Tomorrow, I plan on airbrushing primary colors. Tonight, I am going to do a little touch up work and get it ready for airbrushing. Will post more pics as soon as I can.
I tried the box thing a bit ago…stuck a trash bag inside the box and held my parts inside it while airbrushing. It worked great; no mess, and no need to go outside to paint. Thanks for giving me a great idea!

You know there are so many things in our homes we take for granted that can be used for our hobby. I have made my own modeling tools such as scribers and sanding sticks from things I have laying around the house. This has saved me a fortune making my own tools at home and allows me more money to spend on model kits instead of tools. Sometimes making your own model building tools can be as much fun as building a model. Also there are a lot of every day things we buy that you can into model accessories. I have made seat belts for ejection seats with vacuum seal foil from a can of ground coffee and with very realistic result. You are going to learn a lot from fellow modelers here about things that will improve your model building skills and this includes making tools and accessories from scratch.
