I recently purchased the venerable Revellogram AD-6 Skyraider kit. I’d like to improve and/or replace the weapons which come supplied with the kit. Does anyone know of an aftermarket set of Viet Nam era weapons that I can purchase? I’d like to add some different rocket pods, bombs, etc.
The Revell kit does come with Vietnam era ordinance (Mk 82 Daisy Cutters and 7 shot rocket pods). But if you want a wider variety, True Details makes some other types such as CBUs, 19 shot rocket pods, Minigun pods, Napalm cans and such in resin. You can also hit the Hasegawa weapons sets for rocket pods, Mk 82 500 lb Snakeeyes, Mk 81 250 lb bombs, M117 750 lb bombs…
Stik, yes I was looking for a little variety. I like those 19 shot rocket launchers. Your post also got me to thinking. (A scary thing, I know) For Christmas my wife got me the 1/48 Revell F-5 Freedom Fighter (the one with the Sundowner tail markings). That kit came with a couple of 20mm gun pods. I know those weren’t used very often on the F-5s so maybe I’ll sling those under the Skyraider wings. But first I’ll have to see if the Skyraider actually carried those or not.
But have you seen any photos of a A-1 carrying 20mm gatling gun pods? I do know that F-4s used them, but no other types I am aware of. It would definately have to be carried on the innermost wing hardpoint because it could not be synced to fire thru the propellor, and is too big to go on the outer wing hardpoints.
Thanks for all the great info guys! I maily build WW2 US aircraft so my knowlege of Viet Nam era ordnance isn’t all that great. Getting down to the specifics of which aircraft carried which weapons is something I need to work on.
On a funny note, while cleaning up my stash last night, I came across two of Hasegawa’s weapon sets! I completely forgot I had them! One was for air-to-air weapons but the other one was for various bombs. So I think that’ll serve me just fine. I’d still like to find some different rocket pods or munitions dispensors so we’ll see what I can find in resin.
If you can get hold of the Tamiya A-1 it does come with 4 CBU-25 dispensers. And the Hasegawa bomb set does have the Napalm tanks but it is highly recomended to remove the fins.
