Sizes and Adapters-I know theres people out there who know this...

Ok all. I had a post on compressor/AB sizes before and nobady could answer it. So I’m asking all the pro ABers again. Do all airbrush propellant arysol cans have the same size mouth? Is there a set caliber of size of all AB propellant cans between all the propellant companies? Is there a set size in compressors too? I’m having problems with adapting to compressors and stuff like that, I just need to know if everything is standardized and uniform in the two businesses. Thanks.

I am not familiar with the propellant cans but on compressors there is no standard size, although many manufacturers use the 1/4" NPT thread.

Mike

General purpose compressors (as opposed to compressors specifically for airbrushes) typically use one of two sizes; 1/4" NPT or a larger size (3/8" NPT I think but I’m not certain). Airbrush compressors usually do not adhere to this since they will size the outlets to match the hoses for their airbrushes. You can get adapters and fittings for general purpose compressors at most larger harware stores such as Lowes or Home Depot. If you have an airbrush compressor, you are going to have to find adapters that specifically fit that model.

Also, I think that airbrush hoses are not consistant from one company to another. I’m pretty sure that Badger and Paasche are different. Not sure about Iwata.

I understand that the propellant cans are all different. I have an old Badger Propel adapter and I don’t think it will fit anything other than Propel cans and Badger hoses. Get a can of Testors propellant and it will probably only fit Aztek hoses and can adapters.

iwata is 1/4

dunno bout paasche, badger/t&c, and others… aztek doesnt count

Badger /T&C is something like 1/8". Never measured it, but they are little.

I think he was referring to the size on the end of the hose that connects to the compressor. [:D]

Mike

Even though the Aztec don’t count, I believe it has a 3/8" connection with the compressor.

Is it that big Chris?
Air fittings are almost always NPT standards and a 3/8" NPT is about 1/2" in diameter.

Mike

So was I!! My vinyl hose has the same size connectors on both ends, the size that fits the airbrush (about 1/8"). It’s about 10 years old so they may have changed them. The braided hose has a larger connector on one end (1/4 NPT if I remember right). I have both, and I actually prefer my vinyl hose.

Scott,

I see. I was referring to the braided hoses which as you said are 1/4" NPT on the compressor end and 1/8" or so on the airbrush end.
I was assuming the original post was referring to the diameter of the compressor fitting that the hose connects to which is usually 1/4" NPT and that is what I was trying to answer. Sorry if I misunderstood. [%-)]

Mike, now that I read the original post again, I think you’re right. I should be the one apologizing.

Regardless, he now knows both the compressor and hose sizes! [:o)]

You got that right buddy. [(-D]

Mike

[:D] hi guys,i bought an air brush kit from the [ house of tools ] it is for a can ,but it has a 1-4 inch pipe adaptor for a compresor,it has a regulator that fits to the can as well. i hope i was able to help.[:D]

gdarwin.

Originally, I bought a Badger and then I bought a Paasche H. To my frustration the thread size was different at the airbrush. I couldn’t use the same hose [:(!]

After switching hoses multiple times, I bought quick release connectors at the compressor side.

It’s made swapping hoses a lot easier, though I wish I had an adapter at the other end.

Just buy a Badger 8’ hose with the female quick connect on it. You attach it to the compressor and then you buy male quick connects that screw onto Badger/Thayer & Chandler, Iwata, or Paasche airbrushes. One hose for multiple brands of airbrushes. [tup]

Mike

which they have at dixieart.com.

Dixie Art? You mean that place that has to backorder everything? [(-D]
I can get you a 40% off retail price on one and it is in stock because it is from the manufacturer. [;)]
