im trying this method to make rust where i stick steel wool in some water for like a week and it turns into rust. So far it has worked but the recipe calls for “dull cote” and i cant find this. im going to go to bakers today to try to find it. does anyone else know where to find this[?]
if that doesnt work i think im going to try this method in which i put different amounts of salt in rust colored paint to give it a texture and then paint it right on. this is just an idea i had if you have any other ideas please post thanks
It will work. Rust forms happily with or without our help LOL!!! BEWARE though do all cleanup outside or in a garage sink. The rust will stain your good bathroom and kitchen sinks. I found that out from experience [B)][xx(]
There is a thread in the techniques forum for making rust that I contributed some posts to with pictures.
yeah i just bought some and so far the rust is looking good! but i was thinking i could use the dullcote for something else as well anyone know what dullcote is used for?
you can pretty much use dullcote for anything you want really, word of advice though, dont go real heavy with it otherwise everything will get gummy and look like a camel sneezed all over your armor.
If you are using the dried rust particles I have found that Tamiya dull coat in the little bottle mixed with alchohol and the rust works well.Much like the mixture you use for pigment powder. The dull coat acts as a adhesive medium while it deadens the color.I had bought a bunch of the Tamiya dull when my LHS went out of buss. and didn’t like it for airbrushing, but for me it works great for this type of application. Play around with this mixture on a piece of scrap and I think you’ll like it.I’d try maybe 70/30 alchohol to dull for starters.[2c]
Before you decal a model you would paint/spray a gloss clear coat on the model. Then apply decals and seal the decals themselves with another gloss clear coat. You might then weather with oils or acrylics and chalks. Then since you dont want a weird bright shiney model, you would spray with a matt clear coat-- this is sometimes called dullcoat. Its matt varnish (Either acrylic or enamel your choice)
In your case you are doing something else i think. Your painting real rust powder on tracks or something. You need a binder base coat. As in mix the rust powder in the dullcoate and paint away.
Another way to do this is to use the rust powder like chalk with a brush then spray the clearcoat over it.
Dullcoat=matt clear coat
Glosscoat = future or whatever other glossy clearcoat you want to use. Stops silvering of decals.
I think thats now as clear (pardon the pun) as mud !!
