I was recently building an Me.262 and for its camoflauge I decided to use silly putty to cover the spots that were not to be painted. Then i just airbrushed the model. The silly putty comes off easily and dosen’t let any paint through. I got this technique from one of the articles available on this site. I would suggest anyone interested in using it to use it. I really got a great affect with it.
Only bad thing is that silly putty sometimes leaves a residue, especially if used to mask over acrylics. 8000 to 12000 grit polishing cloths can usually save you (good for removing finger prints too), but you ultimately end up moving paint around. I’ve used silly putty on all enamel jobs and been generally happy with the results.
Can you post a picture of the final result??
I’d be happy to post a picture of the final result. The only problem is that I need to do one last thing to it then I’ll take a picture.
A pal of mine (known to ya’ll here as Eagle334) used that stuff on his little-scale Scooter. Looks pretty sharp. Hope he doesn’t mind me posting this photo…
Fade to Black…
Is silly putty the same as the child use to play?? I think is called play doah.
Thanks
Saul
It’s a kids toy but it isn’t play doh. Are you familiar with the stuff that comes in plastic eggs and you can use the make copies of comics? That’s the stuff.
Thats a great idea going to be building F-14 BE-DEVILERS VF-74 I will give it a try[8D]
Does it give a feathered edge to the lines, or sharp?
It gives a sharp edge surprisingly.
woops, how i do upload the picture?
I thought that little A-4 looked familiar.[:D]
Silly putty is really good for masking hard-edged camo schemes on military vehicles, where you sometimes can’t use tape and/or pva glue because delicate things like brackets, grab handles and tools would get pulled off when you removed the masking. Try it!
I’ll have to give this a try… just another tidbit for the modelling file.
