Shooting a future-based dull-coat on to a pastel powdered plane...

can this be done?[?]

i’ve done a white-washed stormovik and accentuated the weathering with pastel chalks brushed on and worked into the surface, but at the moment i can’t touch the thing otherwise i lose the effect!![:0]

can i spray a future based dullcoat on this without ruining the efeect?

has anyone doen this with a whitewashed aircraft before?

help![:0]

any ideas would be very much appreciated[:)]

thanks,

Nick

Go to your local Games Workshop and get a spray can of matt varnish - they call it ‘Purity seal’

Lightly dust the model with the spray, you will end up with a lovely flat protective finish that won’t effect your pastel work.

I usually save the pastel work for last, right after applying the flat or dull coat. Most times you will lose the effect when you dull coat.

If you’re careful, you should be able to overcoat with clear and not lose the pastel weathering. Since your Sturmovick is white washed, your pastels are dark which is good. Light pastels on dark paint do usually disappear after sealing. Since you have worked them into the surface as much as possible, that is good too. If your model is currently gloss, you may find that the pastels will mostly blow off initially. If so, reapply them to the flat coat, because they will grip a flat coat a lott better than a gloss coat.

The main thing that I have found is to go with minimum pressure and maybe hold the airbrush a little further away from the model than normal, at least for the first pass. The idea is to get the clear coat to seal the pastel powder without blowing it off the surface.

Typically, the clear coat will tone down some of the pastel effect, so you need to go a liitle heavy on the application. It takes some practice to learn exactly how much to over-do it, so it is probaly best to be careful initially. You can always add additional weathering, but it is a whole lot more difficult to remove excess weathering.

oh dear…[V]

the pastel i applied was white, the reason being that i didn’t think that my whitewash was white enough![:0]

guess this is one model that has to accumulate dust!!

thanks very much for the advice tho’…at least i know for next time![;)]
