Shiip Model Light

Since were rolling into the holidays and we are probably looking for that very unique gift to give another modeler, I think I may have found something NONE of us have – Thank GOD. In this new Chinese Restaurant that opened up recently they have this (what I thought was a bowl shaped light) over the entrance. As I was sitting was seating eating lunch, I looked over and realized just what it was OMG, it was tacky.

What is it with the Chinese and these really tacky glass bead ship models? This is the first I’ve seen of this one. WHICH I JUST GOT TO HAVE FOR THE PATIO. - NOT

Well, there’s tacky and then there’s genuinely … bad … [prte]

H’mm, I think they had one of those over the first class staircase on the Titanic…[:P]

It’s the same in the UK though. Almost every pub called ‘The Ship’, ‘The Anchor’, ‘The Lord Nelson’, (etc. ad nauseum) will have a crappy 1970s model ship over the fire place- usually a cartoonlike depiction of a ‘galleon’.

That reminds me of one time I visited a pub on the Yorkshire coast where the publican was obviously very in to model ships. There was a 1/48 scale 18th century whaling vessel in a glass case over the fireplace- Proper museum quality, and one for which a good amount of original research must have taken place- whaling ships of this period are not well documented! All this, and several structural timbers in the pub were recycled 18th century ships timbers, so the effect was superb.

Ohh I’d like to see that place. The closest I’ve been to an proper English Pub was in San Fransico, CA. There was a Pub that was brough over from England. Proper 7’ cielings and the basemane wherer the beer was kept. Lyon’s Pub jusy outside of the Lombard Gate of The Presidio. Back in June of 2005 we met some friends there for lunch while on conferance.

unfortunately, it’s actually quite hard to find a ‘proper English pub’ in England now [:'(]

Fine pub, although it’s actually called Liverpool Lil’s. Next time you are in town i’ll buy you a beer.

I was in a restaurant in Monterey CA called The Sardine Factory, good place, last August.

They have a very large and reasonably well made model of the Victory, all wood, over the fireplace.

I thought that is was called LIverpool Lils also but I did a search and it came up as Lyon’s. I thought I was losing my marbles
