Shermans in the Field

Hi All,

I was going to post this in the Sherman Group Build, but maybe some of you who aren’t in on it would like this info also. My subject is going to be a 70th Tank Battalion Sherman (I have a friend who was in the 70th during WWII and he gave me all of his photos and neg’s from the war).

So, looking through this album I found a line up of 70th tanks at the end of WWII in an open field. Here’s what was in the file:

M4A3 76mm wet with the early split loader’s hatch, vertical vollute sprung suspension.
M4A3E8 with T-66 track (single pin, steel) horizontal vollute sprung suspension.
M4A1 75mm dry M34 gun mount
M4 with a THREE PIECE differential housing and M34 gun mount
M4A3 76mm wet, vertical vollute suspension.
Sherman with Dozer blade (looks like an M4 75mm dry)
M4A1 75mm Dry stowed.

Talk about a mix of armor. Their mechanics had to keep a lot of different items in stock! The bright side is, there’s a lot of variety to choose from. There were also composite hull M4’s with wading trunks that went in after the M4A1 DD’s (all but 3 of the 70th’s DD’s made it to shore on D-Day!).

Regards,

Ron

they sound great
are yougoing to post them?

My scanner here is poo. IF I can do a good scan, I’ll post them. It’s really a great album, lots of photos of not only armor (whole and destroyed), but casual army life scenes.
