Sherman Tank taken as War Prize in Iraq!

http://www.activevr.com/afv/cgi_bin/web-bbs/webbbs_config.pl/noframes/read/46867

cool, reminds of the pictures of long toms in '91

I wonder what the rationale for taking the tank was? Sounds like the Iraqis were using it to teach the tankers how to drive. (I didn’t follow that psychological reason the Iraqis were supposedly using the tank for.) Iraq’s rebuilt military will have an armored component, won’t it? They could still use the old Sherman for driving practice.

I guess the theory is that it is a war prize? “I want it, so it’s mine” doesn’t sound like the right policy for a liberating power.

Anyway, it would certainly be an interesting subject of a diorama, as it proudly drives past Paladins and Bradleys and Abrams(es).

is there a pic of it anywhere??? but, hey it was the US’s to begin with, so I have no problem with them taking it back. [;)]

Yes, on the site I posted. Look down the thread a little and look for the PIC message.

I think that’s the general idea, and I guess no harm done under the circumstances, but the tank was after all an asset of Iraq – which now hopefully means the Iraqi people.

ah, might a well post it here, for the lazy people[;)] (like myself)

Shermie has some “'splaining to do”.

what, how he managed to forget about that one or something

More likely, that Sherman was supplied to Saddam by someone, someone who wants to see Shermans in people’s hands, no questions asked … [(-D]

hmmm, I don’t think robert is neither french nor russian.[(-D][(-D][(-D][:P][:P][;)][;)]

There are two Shermans shown on that thread. One, the HVSS 105 shown above and another VVSS 105 painted OD. If they were still in running condition, I’d imagine they had more than one and most likely came from Jordan… my guess.

There were a series of pics posted on Armorama.com, and a few showed various vehicles found in Iraq.
Take a look at these:

There a lots of others. I found this one particularly interesting. Everyone should definitely take a look at the gallery. Some really interesting things in there. Just go to Armorama.com
There is a link right on the main page. I found it absolutely wonderful, especially as a reference for my m-923

Holy Shniekies zokissima!

Talk about an ‘armor museum’! Any prices on those? Can I pick up one of those little Italian jobs at the PX?

Ron

Holy cow. I loved the Churchill. CHURCHILL? Those things looked like antiques even when they were new. And the Chieftain too. I was amazed to see a tank that had been so formidable when I was a kid chewed up by the 25mm gun of a Bradley.

Yeah, it’s really crazy. I couldn’t believe I was looking at those pics. So much stuff that I’d NEVER have expected.
Kind of makes you wonder where the funding for an NCB warfare programme would have come from if this is the representation of their heavy armoured divisions [:p]

What do you mean I have a lot of explaining to do … explain what?

Well, Qadaffi had a nuclear program, and his main armored vehicle in Chad was the Toyota pick-up truck with a Russian machine gun mounted on it!

If the trucks don’t bring the enemy to its knees, go nuclear.

Robert, I think he was just pulling your leg because it’s a Sherman.

Boy … I tell you … find a Sherman where you least expect it and it becomes my fault. [banghead][banghead][:-,][:-,]

A nice find indeed. But is it OK for the US to take it home?

Might as well … they were the first owners of it. [:p]
