Sherman Question

Which Shermans were armed with the 105mm gun?I stumbled on to a local memorial but didn’t have time to check it out (that will be remedied soon I might add).It looked like one of the cast hull Shermans.I don’t recall seeing a cast hull Shermie armed with the 105.

IDF M 51 super sherman

Are you refering to a 105mm howitzer or 105mm high velocity gun?

In US use, the M4 and M4A3, both late 47-degree hulls, were armed with the 105 howitzer. The Israelis and French stuffed a French 105 into a T23 turret and came up with the M51.

It’s the howitzer 105mm I saw.I forgot about the later high velocity stuff.My bad.[banghead]

The pilot models of the 105mm M4 Sherman were made on late M4 composite hulls (with a cast front third and a welded rear 2/3). Production wise, they were placed on 47 degree welded hulls w/ big hatches, both M4s and M4A3s.

If you see a howitzer turret on a cast hull, be assured that it was a postwar Frankenstein.

(BTW, one of these pilots sits near downtown Detroit at some old parade grounds. All the howitzer tanks were made at Detroit Tank Arsenal, about 17 miles away. I snapped many pics of this one)

I figured if it was a cast hull it might be post WWII.I’ll let you know when I check it out.

Thanks

Ed

It’s definately not a cast hull. It’s an M4A3E8 105mm.The locals municipality keeps it in very good shape compared to others I have seen.
