Sherman interior reference pics?

I am relatively new to armor modeling, so I’m asking for guidance…

I have Tamiya’s Sherman series M4 Early through M4A3 75mm. I’d like to build them with hatches open and not have a black hole inside. I thought about buying Verlinden’s resin interior detail set, but the price deters me, so I moved on to the idea of scratchbuilding a basic interior. One problem…I cannot find any good Sherman interior (driver’s compartment and turret interior and floor below) reference pics. [%-)] I’ve tried Google Image searches, can’t find any Sherman books at my LHS and don’t want to order a book online that doesn’t have what I need.

Any suggestions or good websites out there? Thanks in advance for any help! [:)]

Modelismo Piu is a fantastic photo reference site. At the bottom of this page are two collections of M4A1 76W interiors – the drivers area will be the same.

I’ve got that same kit, and it does just beg for an interior, so if you don’t mind I’ll benefit from your post.

You might want to try Squadron/signal Armor Walk Around Number 1: Walk Around M4 Sherman by Jim Mesko. It has detail interior and exterior photo’s of M4, M4A1, M4A2 and M4A3 variants. Another option is The At War series M4 Sherman At War (avaiable through your local bookseller of choice). In adddition to detailed interior and exterior photo’s, it has extracts from wartime M4 technical manuals in addition to development and historical information.

I look forward to seeing any progress you make. I used a bunch of aftermarket resin and PE (that I has won through auctions and raffles) on my Early M4 I entered at AMPS this year.

Hans, thanks for the Flickr link–I got a couple of good pics from that site!

T26E4, the Modelismo Piu page is pretty good; I think I got some interior detail pics from it that (and the Flickr site) gives me the basic idea of the interior of a Sherman! Enough that I’m pretty sure I can scratch build one for what is seen through the hatches.[:)] I really appreciate the link!

TacoBuff, glad I’m not the only one in this “need armor info” boat…welcome aboard! [4:-)]

TOW Gunner, thanks for the book suggestion. Next time I’m at the ole LHS, I’ll ask them to order it for me! 'Preciate it! It may be awhile before I start building my Shermans though…I have a couple other things on the bench–in various states of production–that have been slated for completion before I can start another project. So many models, so little time. [sigh]
