Hi
Everyone
I plan on build a dio… based on the picture below. But what I’ve noticed is that despite the dead GI in front covered by a tarp or blanket I cannot really see any other damage to the tank itself. Any ideas what might have happened in this case?

Thanks
Scott
Probably a hit on the right side of the tank.
Either a hit on the right side, or in the rear engine deck area.
That rust all over the glacis looks suspiciously like a fire cooked the paint…could it have caught fire?
[#ditto] I was thinking the same thing, but the tracks do not appear to have burned.
Ok
Thanks
Now for the follow up question. What would battle damage on a Sherman that didn’t blow it to bits look like?
Thanks Again
Just like that.
The AP shells of that era were designed to penetrate, then explode, thereby causing internal damage. It is sometimes easy to miss the hit especially on the lower hull.
Blast overpressure will almost always pop the hatches open. Fire results from internally stowed ammo, fuel, hydraulic fluid, etc.
Sounds and is nasty…thats why I remained a grunt, I can run faster scared than a tank can roll!
Hits from panzerfausts usually only resulted in a dime-sized hole in the armor…catastrphic explosions are mostly Hollywood…typically the only time a tank would blow itself to bits is if it burned long enough and the main rounds cooked off…
