I inadvertently bumped one of my large shelves off its stand, sending it onto the shelf below and the combined weight of the shelves and nicknacks caused them both to crash down on top of my dresser. Numerous keepsakes and handmade art was broken, and all the model aircraft sitting on the dresser top were shattered in some way. Take this advice from one who just found out the hard way: get shelves that are bolted to the wall, and don’t over fill them! [blkeye] [:(DD]
The shelves in question:
and the resulting model carnage:
I’m gonna need a restock on super glue once I get finished saving what I can, but some are complete write offs… [:'(]
I learned the hard way also, many years ago. I now only use brackets the screw into the wall (find a stud!) and into the bottom of the shelf. I’d split my head open, before the shelf would budge!
The thing is, fermis, the stands were in studs–or at least where the stud finder said there were studs…but the force of the fall did pull two of the stands right out of the wall!!!
Lucky the P-40 is one of the salvageable ones with only a broken tail wheel and just one main gear detached. It was a gift for a family member, so I’m glad I don’t have to make them a new one. The paint scheme is what I like to call “The Hawkeye Warhawk”. You can see the build in the Wild Wings GB.
So far it looks like the only ones that were total losses were the B-17 (cracked clear pieces and fuselage, along with the snapped off wing) and one of my P-51s (also with shattered clear pieces and cracked fuselage). The OD/NG Spitfire had its front canopy cracked in two, but I think with a bit of white glue, it could be pieced back together without too many problems other than a line down the front windscreen. Everything on the bottom of the Mirage was smashed off and I still haven’t found the rest of its landing gear (just one wheel and part of a strut). [:S]
I’ve broken out of my post-accident blues, and am hopeful that the rest of my things are fixable with a bit of work and some super glue!
That stinks Owl! Had it happen to me before and now have a well stocked spares box. I had a cat-tastrophy Saturday morning, My wife brought home two kittens she found by where she works…very cute…til they figured out how to climb …swiped my Mi-24 Hind off a shelf! Its fixable..found all the fiddlys but can`t find the rather large tail rotor…go figure…
I feel your pain Owl! I learned the same lesson from mother nature during the Landers 'quake when I watched my Helo shelf fall. I was able to salvage most of the damaged builds with time and improvisation. A pin vise and brass rod/wire with super glue can work miracles…
The good thing about it is that with one or several builds ready for the big flight into the bin you have a good excuse to fill up the blank spaces with more models[;)]. And more models built will be a good excuse in turn to go buy new stuff[:D]
Love the way you are displaying the A10 you just built[y]
My condoleances to your bad stuff and my congratulations on your new goal[;)]
Owl, I had a similar problem a few years ago. An offering to all who may take heed… I switched to some stand alone shelves in my shop. There is no chance of them pulling away from the wall, studs or no studs. They stand on their own…
I’m so sorry to see that happened to you. Two years ago my youngest son and his associates moved my wife’s and my belongings tro another town 26 miles to where we now live. I rtold hom tonot box the models but to find an area fairly flat and spread out a blanket and set the models on the blanket and thwre wouls be minimal damage. They threw th models on top on one another and everone had some kind of damage to it. like you I now have to decide which will by spare and which ill be repaired. I share tyour pain. Magoo
