I’m new to the armoured forum but not new to the modeling scene. Seen some great builds here and thought I would share some I did before photo etch and resin conversions were available when I made them. They’re not up to the standards I’ve seen here and hope they’re okay with you.
First up is a M551 Sheridan from a Korean manufacturer. It’s basically a copy of the Tamiya 1976 kit so the surface detail was kinda soft. Scratch built the crows nest, rear basket bustle, search light, loaders hatch and main gun.
Next is the Tamiya M48 Patton converted into an Israeli upgunned 105mm Magach. Used 105 mm gun from the spare parts box, scratched the air filters from plastic sheet and wire. Modified the louvers on the top engine deck. Also modified the searchlight storing bracket, machine gun mounts and cupola(ex Sherman).
You underestimate your builds. The purests will love it. I think it’s very well done. Better then my skills. Thanks for sharing them and look forward to more.

You know, sometimes i get tired of looking at all the current after market items to add to a kit. It almost seems to be the done thing these days…to buy P.E. and resin and whatever else and add it to your kit. It seems to bring in all the oooo’s and aahhhhh’s. I think it can scare newbies away from posting. I am not interested in all the add ons. Toooo much work and toooo expensive.
To be honest Richard, your a breath of fresh air. To see your builds pretty much straight out of the box and looking so damn good is a real inspiration. You prove that even an older kit can still look great.
Both your builds are wonderful to look at. The scratchbuilt items on the Sheridan look excellent. The figures on the Magach are so cool. Are they tthe standard kit figures? The commander looks familiar. Is he from the Tamiya M113 APC kit?
You say that they might not be up to standard. Who’s standard are you refering to? I think your builds set a standard in themselves. The only standard you have to work to is one that please you.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Sheridan built up, and so nicely, too! Likewise, the Magach is a piece of work too–very nice work on both builds. I too like to build models and festoon them with gear and packs, etc–as well as figures. It really places the model “in the element”.

I took the pictures under the perspex roof of my porch. It helped difuse the sunlight. Paintwork was the usual old wash and drybrushing. Chipping wasn’t the in thing yet.
Yes, the Commander is from the M113 APC but with different arms. The other is also from an M113 APC but I think it’s from the command vehicle. I added the shades and micro phones.
I am digging both of your kits, to me the essence of modeling is the creativity of scratch building, especially conversions. Would like to see more of your work, thanks for posting.
Thanks Tellis and you’re welcome. I do have one or two more conversions. They’re the Panzer 38T Command vehicle, Israeli Armoured M3 Personnel Carrier and a 1/72 Israeli Isherman. Look out for these post. There is already one on a LVT(A)-4 Amtank titled… Inspired by “The Pacific”.
