A friend of mine was a “red shirt” on that specific cruise. He did not load THAT airplane but he took pictures of it. The pictures were confiscated by the ships captain. ALL pictures were supposed to be “turned in” to the Captain, but obviously some got out. The proverbial “STUFF” hit the fan over that “bomb” load (pun intended). Note the yellow circle with the gauntlet holding a lightning bolt. I forget the unit that represents. Anyone? Also note the “E” for excellance on the bomb, er’ “bowl”. You give young folks automatic weapons and high explosives and “STUFF” happens. I would be willing to bet that the morale of that ships crew went up 10 points when that aircraft launched, and did the same when it returned without the load. Officers are not imune to doing crazy “stuff” to relieve the stress. This is one of those great stories.
Here’s a good link on the mission. Someone makes a resin toilet in 1/48 but I can’t remember who. I had everything but the specific aircraft numbers but ended up trading it all away.

No worse than the coalition forces droping MRE’s of the Pork variety to the Republican Guard troops during GW1. A starving soldier will eat just about anything. Of course one can imagine the gastric and ethical debate it caused in their bunkers.
