Sealing metal paints

I’m trying to figure out a way to seal Testors Crome paint from the spray can, as well as silvers, and other metalic finishes with out dulling out the finish. For example: I have 1/144th b-29 that I painted the control Surfaces silver. I used testors gloss sealer from the spray can again to seal. It went from being silver to a dark gray metalic finish. Any suggestions? I’m concerned because the crome rubs off on the fingers if you touch it. thanks.

Have you tried the Future solution? If you have an airbrush, Future floor acrylic should seal it for you without too much discoloration. I haven’t used that particular spray paint but I think what happened with the sealer you used was that it had the same enamel base which let it discolor your paint, the acrylic base gloss shouldn’t do that. Try it on some scrap plastic to be sure.
Good Luck

Future shouldn’t discolor your metallic paint, but sadly any topcoat Iv’e ever used does diminish the metallic appearance to some degree.

How does the chrome look as far as being comparable to unpainted, unweathered aluminum? Does it look like the real thing moreso than the silver paint Im thinking of using on my 1/48 B-29? I really want the shine and from what Ive seen the regular testors silver isnt going to give it to me.

hey 7474. i’m with chasblake99 here[:)]: future is the absolute business when it comes to clear coating.
if you have any more questions about it, swanny has a great website where you can find his “complete future” article, or take a look in the techniques forum.[:)]

According to ModelNerd, Tetsor’s silver in the rattle can will shine like the chrome. What he did after spraying the silver was to Buff it with a cotton T-shirt. He got a great shine off it that way. He says to go easy on it and not press too hard either. I also have found that shooting Future straight, (without flat base mixed) will give you that shine without dulling the silver. The nice thing about Future is that you can shine it as well by buffing with a soft cloth. [:)] Just make absolutely sure that your silver is COMPLETELY dry, or your coat of Future will crack. Happened to me only once! [:(!][xx(]

I also used Testors Chrome Silver on a P-47D and a P-51 Mustang and then Clearcoated with Future. Those two shine well! [8D]

I didnt know you could only spray future on with an airbrush…guess i should stop putting it on with a paint brush[:D]
