SDKFZ. 223 Leichterpanzerspahwagen completed pics!

alright guys, with some time on my hands (don’t start my new job until monday) I have been able to clear out my stash a little. This was sitting in the box 3/4 built and I figured I’d give it a go. Yep, it’s not modern, and no it’s not Israeli LOL… here’s my Tamiya German armoured car. It was built OOB and I added a figure that was sitting in a bag. Painted with enamels (long time since I used them) from Model Master and given a filter (first try at it!) of flat black and raw umber. As always comments and criticisms welcome

Looks good. The only two suggestions I have for you are these:

  1. omit the rolled tarp/blanket on the nose of the armored car. If you see from your second picture, it is quite obstructive to the driver’s already limited field of vision.

  2. adjust the width indicator rods and the rear view mirrow on the front left rod. The white balls should be approximately above the corner of the vehicle (that’s why they were there – to help the driver judge when he might contact somehing). And the mirror is facing upwards – not of any use at this point.

HTH

Not bad at all James, only suggestion I’d give is to paint the headlights so that the wire mesh cover is different than the lenses behind it. Sometimes the most relaxing builds are the ones that we just bang out to kill time.

Looks good James.

hi james[:D]-- sharp looking build there—I also see little prob with mirror and headlights need a little more ‘something’-- these are really nothing and easily fixed to perfection-- and i know you will do it-- this is really a nice little diorama, and what makes it perfect is the figure you ‘had in a bag’-- he is in the perfect spot and really completes the look of this build-- pic #7 is absolutely awsome looking to me-- its a great shot!!-- the weathering is very well done – it looks like it went through wet mud that later, dried-- nice work man!![tup][tup]-- i like this build!!-- i wish i had the ability to paint a figure as well as you–any hints?— tread[^][:P]

thanks for the comments guys! This was something I just threw together for fun, to aleviate the stress of detailing my Challenger 2, and while I’m waiting for update sets to come in… but I never thought about the headlights, and Treadwell, yep I’ll fix 'em. Gotta fix the decals too, appearantly Grossdeutchland is not a SS Unit… but that’s simple enough too…

Treadwell, I don’t know what to tell you about figures, other than I have tons of them in bags, or boxes and the like, many of them needing improvement. This is going to have some figs from the Gen 2 set from DML, I forget the name of it, but they’re looking over maps and such. Figures aren’t as hard as everyone really thinks they are. you can super detail tanks and make them look real, you can do the same on a fig, it’s all about shading and highlighting. Three base tones from Model Master are all I use, warm flesh, dark skin tint, and light skin tint. start dark and work your way up in smaller successive highlights with mixes of them, using less paint as you go along, do a wash, actually a filter with the base colour you used to get rid of any graininess on the fless and you’ll be fine… I did a filter of raw umber on this guy to draw the tones together, but if you want a cold looking flesh, use some blue into the mix of the base colour! Calvin Tan’s “Painting Waffenn SS figures” is a great resource and highly recommended!

I wanted to do some chipping but I couldn’t figure out the right colour to use to acheive this on a Panzer Grey vehicle… any ideas?

T26- thanks for the comments and ideas. As far as I know of width indicators is they bend easily, but it’s an easy fix none the less! As for the blanket, there will be infantry looking over maps and such with equipment scattered around, perhaps they just set it there for the time being? :stuck_out_tongue:

Looks great man! Nice, small, and fast. We all need that once in a while.

James,

Chipping on a Panzer Gray finish (and a Dunkelgelb one too for that matter) would reveal Red Oxide primer underneath.

I hear you on the figures, I’ve got a box full of them from various kits over the years.

Only one criticism…stop building great builds they make mine look like crap.
