SDKFZ. 222 Finished. Pics

Hi all, generally I build stuff with egg beaters at the front but… I got this model given to me as a present some time ago. Its a tamiya 1/35. I Finished my last plane and decided to have a go at it. If you look carefully there are a couple of seem joins that could have been better and a couple of sink marks that could have been filled better. But overall i dont think it looks too bad. You never know i may even try another. Anyways heres a few pics. Please point out any shortcomings as this only goes to help me improve my next offering.

Thnx for posting your armored car. Overall it looks nicely finished. I see your PE upgrades – generally good.

A few things to note:

  1. the armored klappes on the turret sides are upside down
  2. Your headlamps are askew
  3. the blackout light on the rear is missing its flap (which flips to obscure either the four reflectors or the two oval lenses)
  4. Maybe it’s due to the weathering but your decal lines are visible – are you undercoating with a glosscoat( Future)?
  5. Watch the excess decal film on the license plates
  6. On a big muzzle like the 2cm KWK, it should probably be drilled out. Same w/the MG34 too.
  7. Replace the kit supplied jerry cans. Real ones had three parellel handles
  8. I’m pretty certain that the rope on the bumper was a thin metal tow rope/cable – not a natural fiber rope.
HTH and keep up the good work

Thx for the comments Roy, much appreciated. Upside down Klappes…DOH, schoolboy error.I did future the model but found the decals to be the worse part of the kit. They didnt want to leave the backing and really showed up the excess d/film.

Many thx for giving the time to look at my attempt. Ive seen the quality of your models on here previously and respect your opinions.

Not much gets past Roy, that’s for sure. Overall, not a bad build Guy. The two biggies for me was the tow rope and the decals. Also, on a few pictures it looks like you got some build up of rough paint. I’ve done that before too. Not sure your air source. I believe it’s from spraying too far away and drying too early. Overall a nice effort and you’re on your way to building more Dark Side armor.

Nice build. I really like the turret screens. A sugestion if I may. Add some orange and red to your rusted mufflers. Stipple it on and don’t wait for one color to dry before adding the next color. Oh and the tow cable is definatly supposed to be metal.

Thx all for the comments, Very constructive. I will endevour to make my next model better. What would you all recommend for my next one? Quite fancy a Prime mover or a half track. What do you suggest? Who better to ask than the Daddies!!!

Well, those guys said it all. In regards to the decals, have you also consider using a setting solution like MicorSol. I use those even on flat surfaces as they tend to ‘melt’ the decal film a bit more onto the model.

Hi Waikong, yes i did use a setting solution. I think the decals could have been ‘Off’? They took an age to peel off the backing and looked like they were falling apart as i applied them. Would it be worth removing them and trying some aftermarket stuff?

You could go for any of the 251 halftracks and get them cheap off of ebay. Tracks suck though. AFV’s and Dragon are very detailed, but come with the tiny indy tracks. Or how about Dragon’s new M2 US halftrack? I think the tracks are in only 2 pieces per side.
