Sd.kfz7/1 20mm FLAKVIERLING-*COMPLETED* 12/27/08

-SMJmodeler

I always wanted this kit as a kid. I just never pulled the trigger. I suspect it will need AM tracks at the very least. I think Hobby Boss makes some in 1/35. Wish I knew more.

Hey SMJ I built the kit a while back, when I was first starting out building. The detail isnt that great, I drilled out the gun barrels of the flak gun because they are solid pieces, and there are some ejector pin marks that need filling on the back of the gun shields. Overall though it wasnt a bad kit. The tracks will need some strong glue to keep them down on the wheels, unless you use aftermarket ones. Heres a picture of mine:

Good Luck, and have fun. The tamiya kits are always a nice break from more complicated dragon ones.

I recently built the Sd.Kfz. 7 and I used MK Tracks and roadwheels, a metal drive sprocket was included. Picked them up on Ebay. Makes a difference,IMHO. If you don’t want to use MK, I would replace the tracks with something besides the kit supplied tracks. the kit tracks lack detail. AFV might have a set. They do for the Sd.kfz 11.

HTH

SMJ I remmember building this kit way back when (I built two of them)A very fun build and now with all the am stuff availabel this should build into a real looker.

tigerman, mobious and panzerguy: I’ll look into those AM goodies…I think replacement tracks will be a must.

mg42gunner: NICE!!!..thanks for posting the pic’ [tup][tup]

SMJmodeler i’m building one of these for the Red Storm GB, although mine is with the armoured cab with Flak 37. I was thinking of going to aftermarket track route also, might be a bit hard to find the correct ones in good old Blighty.

Look forward to seeing some pics to compare and help me with.

I know this is gonna look good. The image “http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/boese/g065.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. Can’t wait to see how 'ya build it.

You also might want to consider replacing the barrels on the quad 20mm with either Armorscale or Griffon items. The kit-supplied barrels are solid muzzles and don’t have the perforations in the flash suppressors.

wbill76: Thanks for the suggestion on the quad 20mm, but I think I’m going to stick with what I have.

Guys: I need some track replacements. I tried Hobby Boss, tigerman, but couldn’t find them. Also tried MK…no luck…another supplier was out of stock ($27.95)…can anybody help with a weblink?

SMJ, you should be fine with the stock gun barrells, as long as your carefull when drilling them out as they are pretty thin already, so its easy to drill out into one of the edges. Also the tracks are the real downfall of the kit. If I had the money I would have replaced them, but with new tracks yours will look tons better.

SMJ I was looking last night and I came across Internet Hobbies, they have a set of Fruilmodel tracks for the SdKfz 7.

Guys: I finished the 4-gun/ 3-person anti-aircraft assembly last night. I’ll post a pic’ soon. I have a new appreciation for the quality and fit of the newer Tamiya kits. If you’re not familiar with this kit, it’s an oldie, and although it appears to be fine on the sprues, the intricate fits needed for this assembly are lacking. There was some flash, not too bad…but, the [censored] ejector pin marks were nasty! There were FIVE of them on EACH piece for the side shields alone[banghead]!!! Not only were there a lot but they were in tough spots, near tiny raised rivets, corners and on chair back rests, RIGHT ON THE CURVED AREA[|(]!!!. I was determined to make a go at repairing these, something I somewhat overlooked on my previous builds. I think I was successful on some but not others…nothing disasterous, just disappointing. Question: How/what do you guys use to fill ejector marks…is putty the only good way? I also need to drill out the ends of the machine guns…any advice on a good way to do that? Thanks for any advice.

SMJmodeler

Putty and/or sanding are your only options when it comes to ejector pin marks I’m afraid. Some people use old sprue mixed with MEK to do the same job but I’ve never tried it.

As far as drilling out the barrels goes, I recommend you mark the ends of the barrels with a sharpie then use a small bit (or even the tip of a knife if you’re really careful) in a pin vise to mark the center and create a starter hole. Marking with the sharpie will create a good contrast with the plastic so you’ll know right away if you’re off-center or not and can still correct before drilling too deep. Then use a larger bit to drill out the muzzles carefully. Since there’s 4 of them, it’ll be more obvious if one or more of them aren’t centered, so take your time with it and go slow.

Might I also suggest prior to marking, lightly sand the surface. It will be easier to be precise without mold lines, etc.

Guys: Here are the progress pic’s for the anti-aircraft assembly. I’m glad that the instructions have this first…better to get the tough stuff out of the way:

[:)]So far, so good. Look’s like the anti-aircraft gun went together perfectly, don’t see any drastic sanding or anything.

SMJ,

Looks like there are ejector marks on the upper seat backs for the two side seats that you missed, otherwise the assembly looks good. I probably would’ve drilled out the muzzles before installing them into the assembly, but you may actually have a more stable work platform with them already installed. Let us know how it goes!

So far, so good SMJ…I’ll be watching this build closely, as this was the first armour kit I ever bought (about 18yrs ago I think) but I never completed it…in fact, I only got halfway done the gun, then for reasons long since forgotten, I boxed it up and have only recently rediscovered it…you’re re-firing my motivation to finish this kit.

Cheers and good luck

Very nice start SMJ! When I sand a/c fuselages (central seam) I cover rivets/details with tape, to protect from stray sanding maneuvers  I also bought some sanding sticks (Micro tools maybe? cant recall), which are about 1-2mm wide. You can sand smaller areas or reach into hard to reach areas.

Look forward to yoru build!
