Scribing Panel Lines For 1st Time, Help Please

Working on Academy’s 1/144 MiG-29 and the panel lines are recessed but quite small.

I chopped a little off a small needle and put it in my pin vise but still could use a little advice before continuing.

Should I use thick, rubbery tape to guide my needle? Or should I use a small metal ruler that I have?

Any other advice?

Dymo tape works well.

For heavily curved areas like a fuselage I use Dymo label tape. You can probably find it in craft stores or maybe an office supply store. I get mine at the local craft store. It’s sticky with a peel off backing. If you cut it into strips you can get it to conform to most curves. just remember to scribe against the straight, uncut edge. For relatively flat surfaces such as a wing, I use an eraser shield, scribing template, or whatever sturdy, flexible straight edge is handy. I don’t do lots of rescribing, but these have always worked for me.

Thanks very much for the tips. The tape I have is thick, rubbery and flexible. Would this be sufficient or is Dymo tape a must?

TY,

Dave

if you tape is ‘rubbery’, sounds like it will give when you push against it with your needle. The reason why people use Dymo tape is that it can bend an d sticky, but is stiff from the sides.

I’ll try Dymo.

Dave

The dymo tape works well, I have used it… what I have found though is that free hand is better- if you are careful. The key is patience, go over the line with NO pressure other than the weight of the scribe, the line itself will work as a guide. After running across it a few times you will start to see the line deepen, you can then start to add a little pressure to deepen it.

If you lose the line, Tamiya LSP works very well to fix any mistakes…

All that said, I work in 1/48 and I am not sure how much more difficult this would be in such a small scale as 1/144

Rescribing panel lines on a 1:144 fighter? Hope you’re using a Opivisor! Man that’s too small. You must be young with good eyes. [whstl]

I can do it but something tells me I’ll be wearing trifocals in a few years![8-|]
