I need some help, I want to scratch build an M50A1 Onto.
The six barreled recoilless rifle tank used in Vietnam. Any statistics, info,pics, ideas on how to build it, would be greatly appreciated! Especially the scale of it in 1/35. I have always wanted one of these tanks. They aren’t readily available in the states and the resin kits are just too expensive, even for a LHS owner. My Dad remembers them from the war and has told me some of what he remembers. But memory only goes so far especialy when the memory involves being shot at.

Darr The Ontos ( which in Greek means “The Thing” ) Is one of my favorite AFV’s I have many photos as well as addreses of websites dealing with it give me a couple hours to get what i have together and I will post it by tomorrow[8D]
I created a pattern of this Ontos for Scale Model Accessories in 1/76; I can give you a copy of that 1/76 drawing, and there’s a guy somewhere on the net who was re-building a real one, with tons of fantastic pics of details and all. If you’re interested, I’ll try to find the address.
Renwal did a 1/32 scale kit of the Ontos and Revell reissued it in 1982-83. Still pop up on eBay all the time. Not 1/35, but close enough to utilize many of the more modern detail parts. I’ve got the Revell kit I built 24 yrs ago and a Renwal kit a friend gave me in 2001. I’ve decided to use aluminum tubing to replace the gun tubes.
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about the wheels for the Onto? I think Stuart tank wheels are a close match, but does anyone know of a company that makes just the wheels so that I wont have to waste a tank to do this. Also I solved my problem of the Rifles, AFV makes them, the only thing is that they come with TOW missle launchers. So does any one have a need for a few TOW’s[:P]? I would be willing to trade or sell’em to a good home. I will keep all of you updated as the build progresses, right now it’s the gathering of intel and parts.

Always loved the Ontos, from the time I first built the Renwal kit. It’s my third favorite piece of armor. The two types I drove in the Air Force have to come first. It took a long time but I finally found one a couple years ago. The armor on the Ontos was paper thin wasn’t it? From pictures it looks like my 113s armor was about three times the thickness.
No thank you. I posted this because I wanted to “Scratch build” it, and since I have built since I was 9 I do have some experience. I appreciate the offer but it is unnessasary. I have an LHS that provides what I need.
