Scale of preference for aircraft

i like 1/48. i have m.s. so the parts a little bigger and easier for me to handle and see. i’m able to put as much detail in as i want and see it all when i’m done. the price on most of them is resonable if you shop around, especially ebay.

When I started serious modeling, back in the early 1960’s, I built 1/72 scale exclusively. Over the years, I gravitated to 1/48 scale, which is now my preferred scale. That said, I still build a fair number of 1/72 models, especially the larger aircraft such as bombers, mainly for space considerations. I’ve only built a few 1/32 scale kits, they are too large for my storage/display areas.

In My opinion Ebay is a modelers dream come true!!! DEALS ARE JUST EVERYWHERE!!! Just don’t spend more then you’r willing to spend on a kit and you are sure to make a deal!!! The most I ever spent on a model kit was under $70 dollars!!! The reason was cause it was long out of production!!! I was able to get some heck of a good deals on some model kits that I have been Looking for!!! I’m having a ball this weekend!!![:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][[:D] I can’t wait to get them in the mail!!!:D]
five of them is from in the mail!!! and the others are from a very GENEROUS Person!!![:D]!!! I’m so excited I can’t wait!!! It is like chistmas has come earlier this year!!! except I have to pay for them!!! but It’s worth the money to me cause it is a once in a blue moon deal!!!

All my a/c are in 1/48 (I like the size and detail level) and all my armor in 1/35.

i build both but space is a concern as with everyone else
my guide lines are if the real plane is more than 50-54 ft in lenth 1/72 scale if it be smaller i can do it in 1/48
if i were to do a b-29 the only way it would fit in the house is if i put it in the living room with lights hanging from it so i could use it as a chandelier[(-D]

[:D] My B-29 is hanging from the ceiling in the corner of our den, since it’s the biggest thing I’ve done so far. All my a/c are hung, keeps them out of the way and eliminates the need for shelves. When I finish my AC-130, that’ll go in one of the other corners, and the B-1B will go on the topmost bookshelf (too heavy to hang). I’m gonna need a bigger room, soon, though.

I tend to build both 1/72 & 1/48 But, if they ever come out with the RA-5C, the A-3D in 1/32 or 1/24 scale…[:0] I’d be on it in a heartbeat!![:P][:-,][:-^]
Keep the razors sharp

I must confess that I do have a 1/32 scale in my stash. But it’s an ME-163 Comet with a Phoenix cockpit. For such a small plane it seems huge at that scale-can’t even imagine the size of those 1/32 A-10 kits!!

I’m a 99% exclusive 1/72 modeller. The wide range of choices are a major plus (including many very obscure types), and it is the only scale where you can theoretically get the full size range of aircraft in a “managable” size, from largest to smallest. That is, without buying a new house! [:D]

it depends on the model, and the price, but i go for anything really

I build 1/48th scale aircraft exclusively , I like the larger size than 1/72 scale .

Hello,
I like both scales. 1/72 has a nice variety and is pretty easy on the wallet - or at least it used to be. 1/48 gets you a bit more detail. But the major factor in choosing a kit is if I like it or not - I have 5 1/32 kits that are waiting to be built.
Cheers,
Eric

Prefer 1/48th scale, but will build selected subjects(can’t get then in /48th) in 1/72nd, some helo’s I will do in 1/35th

I build almost nothing but 1/48 AC. Even the big ones; AC-130, B-1, B-29. I do have a couple of 1/72 planes, but they’re of planes that aren’t available in 1/48 (B-36, KC-135) I would love to build a 1/48 B-47, or EC-2 kit if only somebody would make one[sigh]. The drawbacks to 1/48 are size, (but that’s also what I like about it) and 1/72 has more of a selection. I hang my planes up, but I need to build a display cabinet of some sort to keep the dust off of them. 1/32 planes are very impressive when they’re built, but your display space would fill up quickly, and there just aren’t very many choices (there are more now than a few years ago, however)

I stick to 1/72 for all the previously stated reasons of costs and storage but I also like the variety, not just in aircraft but you can also get ships and a fair selection of armor in that scale. I like to switch gears every now and then to keep things fresh. I have tried 1/48 and 1/32 in the past but keep coming back to 1/72.

I too have been pondering the switch to 1/48 especially now that Tamiya and others are starting to crank out armor in 1/48. However, space is a still a big consideration as I have three kids so I will probably stick with 1/72 for now.

It seems that most, if not all the comments are similar and on par with my own concerns and conciderations; display space, prices, physical limitations, or nastalgia, variety, etc. I forgot (or just denial kicking in) that I’m not getting any younger, and neither is the eyesight, and 1/72nd scale can be tricky on the eyes during construction in some instances. I really enjoy showing off my collection to friends and colleges with models in 1/72nd scale because, without saying a word, they can emmediately see the size relation to other aircraft they sit next to, and they can more easily appreciate the history and significance of each. I enjoy that aspect too! Ofcourse the same can be said with any subject that are displayed of the same scale. An Interesting topic, and no easy conclusion on my part to say the least. But hey, it’s all good fun, any way I try to look at it, I still am able to model anything I’d like with the same level of personal gradification…others are not as fortunate. So, with that said, and all the interesting responses, I think I will stay the course with the scale I have ground to love (and hate), 1/72nd scale. Clearly for me, more advantages than disadvantages outwiegh tottaly switching. Besides, a 1/48th scale jet sitting among my “airforce” of 1/72nd scale jets would just look, well…odd. Thanks all for your comments and opinions. Keep 'um flying whatever the scale!

Speaking of which, Greg, how about posting some photos of your air force?

Your signature is a great teaser.

I like 1/32 or bigger. It’s a good size for adding details and it looks great. The best place to get cheap kits is yard sales. Got a brand new Haswega (?) 1/32 Spitfire, not even opened, for $4.00!

I build only 1/32 and 1/24 for the aircraft side of things, besides for lage bombers. Modern Jets I will do 1/48 because the size is on par with a 32nd scale WW2 aircraft. The size just impresses me, and after months of work I like to have something very substantial in my hands. Plus, building large scale brings it’s own set of challanges to the table, especially regarding straightness and smoothness of the finished product. Every scale has it’s challanges, I just enjoy the challange of a 1/32 scale kit over the minute work of a 1/72 job.

I don’t build AC much anymore, but I prefer 1/48 for what I do build. It’s a perfect balance of size/detail I find.
