Scale effect paint whitening for 1/35

There’s a ratio somewhere that says how much white one should add to paint to lighten it for the proper scale effect in 1/35 scale. Anybody remembers?

I dont know of a standard rule here. Different schemes, cammo patterns are just a few of the variables that can affect how much one lightens colors. Wouldn’t you be better served by experimenting on your own to determine this question?

You will get a lot of responses like “I usually use a 70/30 mix”…I don’t think that it will mean a lot. Each build is unique in this respect IMHO, sometimes I lighten colors, sometimes I don’t.

Even though I should lighten it for scale, I don’t. Maybe someday I’ll care. [:-^]

according to the Model Master paint product guide , thier actual color is based on 1/1 reference–1/32 scale gets 10% white added, 1/48 gets 25% and 1/72 gets 30%----for 1/35, you gotta do your own math![(-D]----tread[8D]

How about making it 10% white to keep the units nicely divisible by 10?

Nah, forget the whole idea of definite ratios. Experiment and be versatile. Different environmental factors will fade and tint the paint to various tints, so there’s really no definite, locked-on standard.

I typically never lighten the paint for scale effect. I’ll find a base tone thta I like, then after the model is covered, I’ll go over it with slightly lightened tones of the base, centering around large flat areas. I do this by eye until the effect is pleasing.

You gotta wonder if an exact ratio can even exist considering that subsequent weathering steps tend to darken the base-coat anyways…

I’m in with what the others are saying …there is no hard rule as to how to lighten you color …I for one never use white except when I’m painting a sand color base …If I’m doing a green or OD finish I always use a sand or buff color to lighten the paint because white tends to (gray ) the greens and even worse on redbrown (goes pinkish) I tend to lighten my base colors quite a bit since my weathering usually darkens the finish …The best advise I can give you is to experiment till you find the right mix that you are comfortable with .

all the best

just to set the record straight, I also lighten or darken to what pleases my eye-- I was just giving what was a written referance–art for artsake!![:D]—tread[8D]
