scale aircraft

hi

i build in 1/32. am ready to finish a b-25 mitchell. am starting a b-17 in 1/28 scale. will the b-17 at 1/28 be way out of scale to the 1/32. or will they look compatable.

Is the B-17 a balsa wood kit? Because I do not know of and plastic kits of the B-17 in 1/28 scale. In my opinion the scale difference should be slight but definetly noticable to all of those with a keen eye. To the laymen probally not.

the best way I can describe it is like this…

in 1/28 scale, the length of the B-17 model would be 31.86 inches. In 1/32 scale, it would be 27.86 inches long–4 inch difference. Actual plane length is 74 feet, 4 inches. The wingspan is 103 feet, 9 inches. So, on the two scale models, wingspan would be:

1/28–44.46 inches

1/32–38.91 inches

its a bit of a difference, but without seeing the two scales side by side, I cannot say whether most people would notice the difference. Then again, if you put a 1/28 B-17 next to other 1/32 aircraft, I would imagine it would stand out a bit when you compare like-sized portions of the two, such as pilot’s seats and so on.

If you set them up so that they are viewed in a force perspective then the different will be negated. How ever if you set them side by side it will be obvious they are not in the same scale. If it were me I’d display them at opposite ends of a room. But hey, they are YOUR models, not mine.
