howdy YALL…
So Over the weekend I was online and came upon some AFV’s of a couple of modelers who swore
that WASHES must not be used on tanks and just for figures…and the darn thing was that their work
looked BETTER than those hundreds that did use them that I’ve seen so far in my life…
Say…fine folks…did a couple of modelers just commit a felony of sorts??
I repeat…NO WASHES…ZIP…NADA…and still look great???
oh boy…I’m going to faint now,can someone please explain how that is even possible???
Well, I think the word ‘wash’ probably specifically refers to putting on a general or focused layer of highly thinned paint. This would rule out the oil-dot weathering method, which results in subtle tone variation, and I’ve seen results where this alone was used and it looked just as good as a wash. That, however, is probably because some of the paint settle into the crevases resulting in similar effects as a wash… I’d guess that’s how the models you are referring to were done.
Can you please post either a link to the models or some photos so the rest of us can see?
Dunno if you can say Andrew Dextras’ models arent amazing- all he uses is an airbrush, some pastels, and a few pencils.

Washes are a tool, nothing more, in the arsenal for modelers to use or not use as they see fit. There’s no magic formula or dogma about how to achieve different effects or results. Washes are a means to an end…sometimes you can achieve that same end in a different way and the wash isn’t necessary. Whatever rows your boat! [;)]
